Working Hours
B

Hi guys, just wondering how many "productive" hours on average you have per day? Am I the only one who feels as if they actually get very little done?

Standard studentship stipend.....

Hey! I'm in central London at the mo, and have experience of other places - you will find EVERYTHING cheaper in Cardiff!! Food, drinks when out, cinema the cost of living in London is ridiculous, and I think if you've managed 3 years there as an UG, you'll find being funded in Cardiff like winning the lottery!! Enjoy!

HELP WITH STATS

Hi there, sorry, I only just saw this message. I'm basically going to say the same thing that I said to the other chap! What area is it, and what is your experimental design etc (is it Psychology, even?)

HELP WITH STATS
B

Hey, can't hep you in person as am in London. However, am willing to try a bit online. Obviously, there is a lot of stats in psychology, but maybe if you outline your problem in terms of your research question and design, we can work from there?

What are your favourite academic sayings, proverbs or catch phrases?
B

Ha! Very popular in Psychology at least are about "the bottom line" of your (or others) papers, "the take home message" of talks and "the story" the data tells.

Hohoho!

Whoops! Seems I was wrong on this one. Sorry about that. Maybe I shouldn't reply unless I've checked the facts. Actually, I not probably go to THAT much effort when people can check them themselves...

Suspending PhD in order to make a new TV series....help!
B

Hi chaps. Well, I might be in the position where I will be offered the chance to present another TV science show. Which is all very nice. However, I am wondering whether Research Councils allow students to halt their studies for a year, allowing them to take up their position (and funding!) at a later, specified date? I know this is a bit of an unusual situation, but wondered if you guys have heard of any precedent for suspending your funding?

Do you think we should have an 'introduce yourself' thread?
B

Hello. My name is Bobby (sort of), I'm 24 and in the first year of a Cognitive Neuroscience PhD in London. Oh, and I do live slap bang in the middle of this stinky city. Oooh, does any one else feel like they should end their paragraph with "and I'm an alcoholic...". To be fair, having been in formal higher education for a potential seven years probably does qualify me...

Idiot professor - STABness!
B

Hello. Sorry to be annoying, but I was always taught that if someone says that you haven't explained something, or haven't done it clearly, then by definition you haven't. If your reader doesn't understand it, then its not clear. Has she critised the thing that you didn't write maybe because she thought what you did write had that meaning?

I used to get really frustrated by this, but its true. Still, have a good ol' vent!

Hi VeryPoor. I appreciate sometimes some comments/questions can be a little annoying. But there are MANY MANY types of dyslexia actually which ARE considered a disorder. Not all dyslexias are developemtal, as I'm assuming you have. Dyslexia (Surface dyslexia, deep dyslexia, graphic dyslexia etc etc) can be a consquence of physical changes in the brain (i.e., Stroke, head trauma). Please don't be so sensitive. This is a ligitimate area of study and within that area the dyslexias are known as language disorders. Nobody in the field is being insensitve to you. What do you suggest, that every one stops researching the area so we don't upset people? Or should we just go crazy and change the names of everything least we cause offence to ANYONE? Its political correctness gone mad.

I don't mean to be rude to you in this by the way, I just feel that there can be too much aggression on this site.

Oi VeryPoor don't be so mean! I think a question like this is not asking literally where you CAN do certain PhDs but more for the experience of others about the reputations of good research groups etc.

Biology Phd question

Hi there. Now, no offense or anything, but you don't sound like you'd be doing a PhD for the right reasons. Yeah, you might get to occasionally travel to interesting places during your PhD, but believe me, most of it wont be that "exciting". I actually had a little laugh out loud when you said its the "actual" science you find boring. Well, you wouldn't last half an hour! PhD's a bloody hard work. And most of the time its only your interest for and love in your topic that will keep you going lose that (or worse, never have it) then you wont be going anywhere fast. Seriously, just read the posts on this forum. Do we look like we're all having a great time, constantly?!!!!

Why do you want to do a PhD? You want to travel and you don't want to do much science. Why don't you apply for jobs in industry that allow you to do this?
