Only three suggestions? I'd say that's a definite yes! Many congratulations. especially for your 1st paper. I think my 1st paper had about 30 corrections, and it still got accepted in the end. Well done!

Zutterfly you have inspired me to fill my 1st job application form! I don't expect to get it tbh, but if I don't apply I won't know!

Academic jobs in England - when are they mainly advertised?
H

Hi,

I'm going to be looking for a post-doc or RA post starting in Jan. I was wondering, do most of the jobs start in Sep? I've had a look now and almost all are starting in Sep, and I'm wondering whether I'll miss the boat?

Thanks

Zutterfly, good luck with your surgery! Definitely take time off, you will need it.

Chickpea, sorry to hear your week hasn't been as productive. Mine hasn't either. I don't know if its the heat, or the fact that I've had household stuff to sort out. I'm hoping tomorrow will be much more productive for you and me, and we can get down to work!

Looks like we are all on plan and aim to submit in Dec! We can do this, yes we can!

Yes that part (waiting for supervisors) is very very frustrating! Although I anticipate they'll take 1 month, they may take longer. I truly hope not!

I wasn't planning to take time off in Aug but I think I will because I'll be waiting for my supervisor to get back anyways. I'm also unsure about the job front, and need to get my old CV updated!

I'm planning to submit by the end of the year. My funding runs out at the end of September, so I'm hoping to have a full draft by then, and (fingers crossed) pick up some work while continuing to edit and tidy up all the other bits and bobs (appendices, refs....the list goes on!).

I've got a very similar plan too! Hoping to submit first full draft before the end of Sep, Make changes and proofread in Nov, & submit in Dec. We will make it :)

Are all your chapters written, Hugh? I've got about 50,000 words now but with 2 or 3 chapters still to write. I'm not expecting to go up to the maximum word count, as I tend to have the opposite issue and write a bit too concisely! I'm thinking that when it's all put together for editing, there will be obvious areas of repetition and stuff that can come out.

I wish I could write concisely! :)

All my chapters are written up as first drafts, but half of them haven't been checked by my supervisor yet, so there's still plenty of changes to make, and loads to do. I also have 3 other chapters that need editing. So its no where near a first full draft quite yet. My supervisor is also away for most of Aug/Sep, and I wasn't expecting that, so things are sadly going to move much slower than I anticipated! But I am still pushing for a 2016 submission.

How about you? When do you plan to submit?

Part-time PhD

Hello everyone
I wanna apply for a PhD position in Germany. Working hours is part-time(65% week hours). The duration of PhD is 3 years. Actually I don't understand why some positions are full-time and some part-time while the duration is the same.I mean after graduation is there any difference between this two groups?Salary group is 13 TV-KAH and I don't know how much they pay. I appreciate if you could explain it.

You are right, it doesn't make sense. This is a UK centric forum so its not likely you'll get people who know the german system. Have you tried asking on Quora?

Good to hear from you Zutterfly! I think job applications are one of the most tedious and boring things to do. They suck the life out of me and tend to increase my dispair, and I am not looking forward to that stage.

I've just done a calculation of word count and I am 20,000 words above the word count!!! How did this happen? Will discuss it with my supervisor but goodness, I wasn't expecting this!

How are you all doing with word count?

Thanks Jay!

There's no way I'd kick a fuss now - I've only got a few months left and I wouldn't risk jeopardising our relationship. Supervisors can make life very difficult for you if they want to.

I'm frustrated with my supervisor. I was meant to receive feedback from him and haven't heard anything, and I'm tired of waiting. A quick email would be nice ...

Hi guys, long time lurker here, finally decided to join in the very last days before submission! Getting my thesis bound in 9 days, eek! Just doing a final proof read now and stressing about the parts where I have cited one of my externals... I've been using these concepts that he's slightly critical of and my approach has been to use them "in a way that is informed by" the external. So I keep going back and forth on how to word this appropriately and time is running out...

In terms of the abstract, someone told me to just sit down and write one in 30ish minutes without flicking through your thesis or checking anything. I thought that was really helpful as it makes it difficult to overthink and you end up writing down what the cores aspects of the thesis are. Of course it needed polishing but the basic content and structure were there.

Wow that's great news, congratulations! :)

Thanks for the advice on the abstract, I've just done that this morning, and I think it has worked, though it needs major editing, as I am way over the word count!

Best of luck!

Stressed to publish before program's conclusion?
H

Yes I know quite a few people who had conference papers but no publications when they submitted and they are doing fine in academia. Don't beat yourself up.

That's exciting, being at the stage of writing an abstract! It feels odd writing short chapters, after writing a 20k one. They feel very flimsy!

Yes, it feels very odd, and I keep feeling like I should be adding more ...

Another week, another chapter :) What about you, Hugh?

Sounds good. Another short chapter here too! Thinking of writing the thesis abstract too in the next two weeks so there is plenty to do!
