The International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy in the EU
I

“Sustainable Economic Growth, Further Integration and Common Identity: Moving towards a European Consensus”
(Brussels; July 3rd - 5th, 2013)

Since its foundation the EU has undergone multiple transformations in the socio-cultural, political, and economic spheres. Today, the European Union consists of 27 member states, all of which work closely together to develop policies to facilitate common interests such as the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital across borders.

Although the EU has made great strides in the past six decades- both politically and economically- the region still faces challenges in terms of delivering prosperity, bridging the gap between institutions and citizens, and creating a common and collective “European Identity.” Over four years of economic, social and political crisis have presented the EU, its leaders, and its people with a number of crucial challenges, which must be thoroughly and instantly tackled in order for Europe to be successful and to maintain its leading position in the global arena.

The International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy in the EU will therefore offer participants a platform to discuss the present and future challenges of the European Union, and will elaborate on the role of Cultural Diplomacy in improving European relations, enhancing cross-cultural collaboration, building democratic governance, and sustaining peace and stability in the region.

Conference Location
Based in Brussels, the Conference will be hosted at a number of important political, historic, and cultural locations across the city, and will consist of excursions to the country's top institutions and landmarks. Featured locations during the Conference will include: European Parliament, in addition to various foreign embassies and governmental institutions.

Conference Speakers
Speakers during the Conference will include head of state and ministers, leading figures and experts from international politics, economics, academia, diplomacy, civil society, and the private sector. The speakers will also include a number of individuals from the ICD Advisory Board.

Conference Participants
Participation in the conference is open to governmental & diplomatic officials, academics & scholars, economists, journalists, artists, civil society practitioners, private sector representatives, young professionals, and students, as well as other interested individuals from across the world.

Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy in Latin America - Berlin; August 14th - 16th, 2013
I

“The Colors of Latin America: Preserving Traditional Arts & Heritage in a Multicultural World”

The countries of Latin America play host to a diverse range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. The Iberian colonization of large parts of the South American continent in the 16th century led to the introduction of French, Spanish, and Portuguese culture in the region, and this mélange, (strengthened even further by the cultural remnants of pre-Columbian civilizations, the influx of European immigrants in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the introduction of Africans to the continent), has led to the development of one of the most clear-cut examples of a cultural melting pot in current existence.

Given the multitude of cultural identities present across Latin America, there has been increasing concern about the preservation of cultures on the continent, particularly in light of the recent destruction and deterioration of Aztec and Mayan cultural heritage sights in the region. Furthermore, as the full effects of globalization continue to be realized and Latin American becomes an increasingly prosperous economic power on the world stage, there exists fears that the countries of the continent could become westernized, diluting their own cultures in the process. The Institute for Cultural Diplomacy has therefore developed the International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy in Latin America with the aim of presenting to the world an original perspective on Latin America and its unique heritage, and will explore the potential of arts and culture to successfully support regional development.

Conference Location
Based in Berlin, the conference will be hosted at a number of important political, historic, and cultural locations across the city.

This is not to say, however, that the “cultures” of this expansive area have blended into one universal cultural paradigm: the diverse range of peoples across the South American continent have often maintained important elements of their own personal cultures, while also adapting aspects of the wide-reaching regional cultural identity, possessing a multitude of languages, dialects, religious beliefs, and popular cultures aspects.

Given the multitude of cultural identities present across Latin America, there has been increasing concern about the preservation of cultures on the continent, particularly in light of the recent destruction and deterioration of Aztec and Mayan cultural heritage sights in the region. Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy in Italy

Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy in Italy
"Italian Cultural Diplomacy & North-South Relations within the EU"
(Rome; June 12th – 14th, 2013)
The Symposium is hosted by the Honorable Francesco Rutelli, President of the ICD
www.italy-culturaldiplomacy-conference.org

Italy’s vast artistic and cultural heritage has allowed the country to use Cultural Diplomacy highly effectively as a foreign policy tool since its unification in the Eighteenth Century. As one of the founding member states of the European Union, Italy has typically been a key mediator in political and economic negotiations regarding integration within Europe. It has been called upon once again to take on this role during the current state of severe economic and political crises throughout the region.

The Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy in Italy will place emphasis on the ways in which the country has directly and indirectly used Cultural Diplomacy as a tool to improve its standing and relations with other countries, particularly with regard to its use of Cultural Diplomacy measures in past international negotiations, as well as the potential for its utilization in the future as a possible means of improving the financial state of the country.

Particular emphasis will be placed on the ability of successful Cultural Diplomacy tactics to ameliorate relations between Northern and Southern Europe in order to overcome the current economic and political crisis, as well as on how Cultural Diplomacy could be used internally to alleviate the long-standing Italian North-South Divide.

The 2013 International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy in the Levant
I

The 2013 International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy in the Levant
"Levant, Cradle of Cultural Diplomacy: Rediscovering the Mediterranean"
The Conference is Co-organized and Co-hosted by the Government of Romania, the Romanian Senate, the Romanian Cultural Institute, the University of Bucharest, the Romanian Foundation for Democracy
(Bucharest, May 23rd - 25th, 2013)

The Levant is the crossroads of Western Asia, the Eastern Mediterranean and Northeast Africa; As such, its countries occupy a region of geographic and cultural significance. Individual countries in the Levant are interdependent and interconnected to the extent that they share both overlapping cultures and natural resources. However, the area is still prone to conflicts, which threaten the immense potential of the region as a whole. These disputes traditionally arise out of a plethora of cultural, political, religious, and economic differences across the region. The successful and long-term growth of each country depends on the stability of the region as a whole, for which de-escalation of disputes and reliable cooperation between states is paramount.

This requires a creative approach which recognises the history behind current conflicts and seeks to provide contemporary solutions. Given the region’s diversity of cultural identity and historical cultural significance, Cultural Diplomacy should be taken into account as a force to effect change.

Conference Location
Based in Bucharest, the conference will be hosted at a number of important political, historic, and cultural locations across the city.

The 2013 International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy & Human Rights
I

The 2013 International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy & Human Rights
"Towards a Global Human Rights Culture: The Need for a Collective Alliance in the Protection & Promotion of Human Rights"
(Berlin, May 26th - June 2nd, 2013)

Since its earliest inception, Human Rights have increasingly been considered to form part of what is now seen as universal law. The creation of the United Nations in 1945 subsequently provided an international regulatory framework for dialogue on Human Rights in the global sphere. Despite a global governing set of laws set forth by the formation of the UN, the international community still lacks a cohesive implementation and engagement strategy in the enforcement of Human Rights.

The conference will therefore provide the platform for activists, experts, academics and world leaders involved in the field of Human Rights to come together, create alliances, and better coordinate their activities, thus promoting better implementation and enforcement of Human Rights in a more effective nature.

The conference will furthermore engage Cultural Diplomacy as a means of uniting the varying sectors of society in order to create a joint collaboration for the protection and support of Human Rights activities, as well as recognize the capabilities of Cultural Diplomacy in enabling governments to fulfill Human Rights obligations towards their citizens.

Symposium Agenda »
The conference will bring civil society and academics practitioners together with world leaders with the intention of creating global alliances and platforms for dialogue. This major assembly of Human Rights activists and experts will create a cohesive coalition of supporters with the aim of strengthening current policies while initiating new proposals in the Human Rights arena. The simultaneous sessions of the Congress will provide a unique opportunity for those involved in the field to come together and discuss contemporary obstacles and needed revisions, work collectively as a single entity, and ultimately propose alternative solutions to current impediments.
