Try software for students for some good prices (I got my word from there). I myself am using a Fujitsu - Siemens lappie. IT professionals seems to rate Lenovo, Fujitsu - Siemens and HP as being the most computers. I recently upgraded to Windows 7 from XP this week.
I am a chemist, what sort of applications are you using the ScN and where are you looking?
Here are some papers to get you started!

I have been looking for a job for 4 years and counting....... I got a rejection today for a PhD I really wanted to get onto as I am familiar with the work and have some herbalism as well as it is isolating herbal constituents for neurological applications.
I feel like I want to cry, in the last week I have had 2 interviews - one although may seem basic to a lot of you, will be tricky for me to do. And the other one, I forgot the stuff in the interview but knew it on the bus going home. I really don't know what I can do. There is a maternity job at the James Hutton institute and I am debating whether to apply for it as I don't have the experience in the molecular biology techniques, but they train you.
I got 69% in my exam, for one of my modules and that for my OU course was 1% off getting a Merit. BUT it is a pass at the OU, in other others it would be a merit grade. I got 54 or 55% in coursework in the same module as I had a 20% mark drop for an assignment as I was getting good grades.
Pity, I could have hauled the mark up from a pass to at least a merit, which is more important for getting on a PhD.
Found a couple of PhDs to apply to. One at QUB doing antimalarials :D and the other is at Hull Univeristy and that is in TRP1 receptors with an older supervisor of the project down there when I did my Dip HE, my failed BSc first time!
In the pre - interview screening thing on Saturday, she did notice the chemistry with the royal society of chemistry thing and I told her about the jobcentre telling you to strip your qualifications in applying for the lower down jobs.
