Viva - Major Corrections
J

I got majors back in May, resubmitted and passed in November. It isn't the end of the world. Remember you passed..... With majors. Get the report, write a list, take a deep breath and just get on with it. You will get there.

The revision is better, but to be honest I wouldn't worry too much about the final title until the end.

Filing of physical files: any tips? or suggestions?
J

Couple of large ring binders and a-z index cards. I file by first author surname, but you know whatever works!

Thoughts on this research question (Education)

Reads like a leading statement to me, like you have already decided that it does. The use of the word arrogance is also strong. I would want to know from the title what sort of education you mean: education funding, teaching, FE etc.

Received conferment notice today having passed my viva amendments. Not so much relief as shock!

Major Changes to Thesis. Can't Really Face It
J

I got majors too in May. But you passed- well done- now one more hurdle to get to wear the silly hat. You ONLY have to make the changes suggested. Ok, so you can make other changes too but it's a finite list. I felt like crap in May too, but honestly looking back it's fine. You will get there.

viva failed
J

I got majors amends in May..... As I understand it minors means 3 months to resubmit and majors gets six months like you so it just gives you more time. It is not a fail. Take a deep breath, pull your finger out and write a list of what you need to do.... And then get on with it. I resubmitted informally to my internal in July. Just heard back this week that amends are fine, but for one minor thing so I will be resubmitting next week. You can do this! My work feels better for it and having come so far you can't give up now.

How long did you wait from submission to viva?
J

Submitted on the 16 September 2013, viva on the 20 May 2014. Pass with major. Resubmitted July, chased and chased and finally had informal email to say amends fine. One final thing to do but can submit for internal only. (Hoping to do that next week).

Little bit of advice needed
J

Don't know if it's still funded but maybe worth a look..... I did an msc in research methods at Nottingham Trent. The first 1/3 (to certificate) was fully funded by the ersc and it even included an allowance of £90 a week. I completed the master there whiles working full time but it was obviously cheaper because I'd already got a third of it.

I also think though that there is no reason why you can't work and do an masters overs two years rather than one.

Trilemma: Professional career, PhD or family
J

I am just finishing my professional doctorate (just doing my post-viva amends). I also work full time and have 2 amazing wonderful children aged 9 and 3. I would give up work and my doctorate tomorrow, but children change everything. I am so thankful I had them. Point is children are time limited, whereas the others aren't to the same extent. It's been really hard work, but it is possible to combine..... I am just the mum who is also sat cross legged on the floor writing whilst my kids are doing their activities.

Childcare Costs with a PhD
J

Your girlfriend will probably be able to get childcare vouchers which could save a couple of hundred in tax. Look at www.childcarevouchers.co.uk. If you can't afford it though you could get a job and do your PhD part time.

PhD after MBA (International Business Management)
J

What about DBA rather than PhD? Still much greater focus on research than your MBA will be.

EdD or PhD - advice / experiences?
J

What about a professional doctorate (DBA) which is designed for people working full-time.? With a bit of effort you can complete in 3 years, 4 if you take your time. Your focus could still be on education.

Civil Service Reserve List?
J

It's impossible to say..... I work in the Civil Service. We are making huge cuts at some grades but expanding in others as responsibility and workload is pushed down to lower grades but that's just one department, others maybe different! Keeping you on hold though is better than starting a new recruitment campaign which is expensive and time consuming.

Viva done!

Well done you!!
