should have gone to Belford University!

What is Belford?

Same question I had! But Googling turns them up as a seller of dodgy degrees.

How very dare you!? Belford is a fine upstanding University that "Grants original degrees printed on traditional degree paper with gold plated seal of the University which identifies it as a degree from a reputed and reliable institution" and "Awards you scores for the subjects that fall under your field of study on your transcripts. In other words all the transcripts offered here bear subject-wise scores, which is an important feature of a real and traditional transcript."

Belford is a fine place, where you can "major" (ahem) in many different subjects. As I didn't have the required 8 years work or "life" (???) experience necessary to obtain a doctorate from such a fine place, I am currently working on my PhD thesis and working to earn the $549 tution fees.

I can get it. Fishbein and Ajzen?

Food at lunchtime!

Couscous or noodles take no time at all to cook, you just need to find something which makes them less bland. Luckily there's absolutely tons of things you could add, it's just a matter of personal preference.

Strikes!
S

Hmm, it's a strange one. Is a strike a withdrawal of work, or a protest? If it's only a withdrawal of work it really doesn't apply to us, no-one notices when we withdraw work anyway. If it's a protest, I see nothing wrong with protesting for a while and then getting on with your work. It's kinda pathetic....but that's what PhD students are!

Personally, I would occupy a nearby building until they got what they want. I don't know what building......maybe the Union bar. :-)

As for the general debate about strikes and Unions, I say we should have more of them. If those in power ain't willing to play Arsenal-style ball, we'll play Bolton-style ball.

Showing emotion in front of your supervisor
S

Quote From sneaks:

I wish I could do this with my supervisor. Things would be so much simpler if I could cry to show how stressed I am, instead I end up saying "everythings fine!" and then I end up with no help, whereas my sups other supervisees get lots of special treatment because they cry.

I don't think I've ever cried in public because I am some kind of repressed English person! I am also known for my non-contact with others and I have a special greeting. I put my hand up in a 'hi' type wave - but it basically looks like a 'stop' hand signal, so it lets people know that I am not open for hugging or any physical contact!

Let me guess; your PhD is on virtual reality simulations of sex?

Anyhow, Natassia, I wouldn't worry about it. I was talking to someone the other day who said she had had two tutees emotionally break down on her in one day. And, one of them was crying because she had broken up with her boyfriend.

Beer and work

Quote From walminskipeasucker:

Thanks Jepsonclough and Slizor. I'll just buy 2 from the good people of my local Spar and see how I get off with them. Dry white wine, Jepsonclough? That's a bit too sophisticated for my palette. Having said that, I have been known to be partial to the odd tipple of Blue Nun in my rock star days.

I'm actually shocked by the idea of only buying two cans. Do people not stare at you? I mean, what conclusions would people draw from a bloke buying two cans of beer on a Saturday night?

Weirdly, thinking about it, I don't think there's anything strange about buying two bottles of beer. Hmm, it may not be the quantity, it could just be that you're actively reducing the amount of beer you buy. It just doesn't sit right with me. That said, my recycling bin has been mistaken before with that of a small popular nightclub.

PS: Turns out that I'm able to work with four cans of beer, but only if I have to run a diagonistic program on my laptop for two hours.

Beer and work

Where's the option for three? Spread over a long time (i.e. a beer an hour+) it doesn't have a significant effect.

I have three:
1. Go to gym 3 times
2. Continue rehab of my shoulders/buy some light dumbells
3. Enjoy St. Patrick's day (this would normally be play football, but drinking takes precendence.)

Too many cooks.... Just want to stick with supervisor opinion
S

Submit your thesis and then send the other guy your revised copy and say that you realise the value of his input but that you didn't have much time before you need to submit.

Also, what do you need from this other prof? Are you staying on for a PhD there, do you need a reference from him? If not, don't worry too much. Academics are used to being ignored/ignoring.

Endnote Question

Yay! Thank you. Amazingly simple, yet I would have never figured it out.

Sneaks: I have a pretty similar problem when it comes to running. Once, when I went jogging with my sister, I ended up sprinting, stopping, waiting for her to catch up, then sprinting again. I imagine including a bit of a walk would be better tan stopping though.

PS: I realise you would look foolish to any bystander.

Endnote Question
S

Hello, I've got a question for you wonderful people.:-) I'm trying to quote a statement made by Obama that I found on a certified pdf made by the US Government Printing Office. The US GPO is technically the author and I would like to put them as the author, but my reference style means that if I put US Government Printing Office the author is cited as "Office, 2010 [online]". Is there any way to make it realise that the GPO isn't a traditional style author so that it displays "Government Printing Office, 2010 [online]"?

I know this seems a small thing with quite a few easy solutions (i.e. call it GPO) but I think it may come in handy to know if its possible in the future.
Cheers(sprout)

PS: I'm now in love with Google. Let's ignore Google Scholar's tie-in with Crossref and capacity to import into Endnote for a sec and marvel at the fact that they have made a search engine that only goes through US government websites. For someone researching US domestic policy it is like nirvana (you know, seeing them when Kurt was still alive.)

Oh dear sweet lord. Just went to the gym for the first time in quite a while and went at it like I used to. My body can't stop shaking from the adrenal it took to maintain a level of exercise that would have been effortless a couple of years ago.

1 gym session down, many more to go before I go to Thailand next year (my sister's getting married there.)

Does anyone else get the feeling they're just making things up as they go along? One for humanities and arts, I think...
S

Thanks Keep_Calm for explaining, although it seems to me you guys use a theoretical framework instead of a methodology.

Anyhow I have another question :-): what do you guys do about referencing? How does it work, do you like quote lines or, say, reference particular parts of movies (e.g. the scene at 1:03:24-1:05:34)?

Quote From walminskipeasucker:

I don't want to be able to run really fast or jump really high, but I want to have a rosy glow to my cheeks and a big smile.

Go to a bar. Order a pint. Drink said pint. Voila! Rosy glow and a big smile.

Anyhow, on the topic. Rock climbing is fun, plus you end up with lovely callused hands and its like lifting weights but you don't really notice.

The best single exercise I know is the plank (google it.) 1 min on the normal version, then 30 secs on each side everyday produces quick results.
