Hiya
My first day will be next Monday. Have you organised a meeting with your supervisor already? My uni says that I'm not scheduled to meet them til Wednesday. It is a good idea to be proactive and contact them before this do you reckon, or just wait til Wednesday?
What is your PhD in?
Cool, I was expecting £6 an hour or something!
It's definitely something I want to do anyway (though they will have to teach me what to do first!), I was just surprised that my supervisor signed me up without asking me first but maybe there was a deadline or something.
Thanks for the replies everyone
I'm starting mine on the 3rd as well - it's in Plant Pathology.
Can't wait!
Have a good first day:-)

Hi
I'm starting my PhD on the 3rd and I received an email yesterday from someone at the university saying that I had been signed up by my supervisor to assist with the first year undergrad lab demonstrations.
Two questions: 1 - Is it usual for supervisors to sign up PhD students for these sort of things automatically? (We did have a brief discussion about it during the interview 6 months ago)
2 - I know they will pay me but does anyone have any idea how much? (I assume it varies depending upon the university anyway)
Thanks
Hi everyone!
I've also been reading this forum off and on since graduating from my MSc in 2006 and am now starting a PhD in Plant Pathology this month. Very excited!
Good to meet you all.
:-)
Hello, thanks it is very exciting! I can't wait to start!
Thanks for the info, I guess it probably does very uni to uni and dept to dept. I shall either ask the supervisor or the admin people soon. I don't really mind either way, I'm just curious really.
The third year is at a uni in America yes so I'm not sure who funds that either, whether it's here or there, or whether I will be paid in pounds or dollars. I guess they might just point me in the right direction with accommodation but the rest will be up to me!
:-)
Hello.
I'm due to start a funded PhD in October and just wondering when they pay the stipend? It is monthly like a salary or quarterly like a student loan?
Also, I have been told I will have to travel to London fairly regularly - will I be able to claim this on expenses or is this expected to come from my stipend?
Finally, the 3rd year of the PhD will be in America - will I have to find the accommodation myself or will there be any assistance with this? Will I have to pay for my flights etc or will the uni pay for them?
Any guidance or previous experience will be much appreciated!
Thanks
Yep thanks guys! Still in shock I think, still can't quite believe it - just keep jumping up and down in my living room!
Hi
Just wanted to share my excitement!
I had a PhD interview today for a fully funded biosciences Phd - I graduated in 2006 and haven't worked in a scientific field since then so imagine my surprise when they offered me the PhD!
This forum really helped with interview tips and stuff so thanks everyone!
Can't wait til October! Now just need to tell my employer they better start looking for my replacement....
