Towards the end of mine, my supervisor insisted I only ever show him the whole thesis so as Corinne says, he was keeping an eye on the 'big picture' and indeed I was asked a question about this of sorts in my viva.

Re: formatting, the following might be worth considering:
- run through it and conduct a tense check.
- although a humanities thesis, ensure that any graphs, pictures, tables etc are labelled EXACTly the same way
- literally go through it page by page and check for any instances of extra lines, font or style inconsistencies.
- I would also do the above with your bibliography.

In relation to presenting your data publicly, what about prezi as an alternative to powerpoint? Registration is free for those in an educational setting. I know it's the 'thing' of the moment but prezi presentations look good and are quite interactive. If not prezi or similar I would try to upskill on powerpoint. Most people use it in a quite boring way but there is a lot that can be done with it to make your presentations stand out.

As regards presenting your data within the covers of your thesis, that is something many of us struggle with; I know I did!

"Knock at the door" / "Legs eleven" / "Key of the door" / "Stuck in the tree" / "Old age pension"

If you can define these, by-pass a bachelors and go straight to a masters. If not, maybe foundation bingo may be required. Would a blue-rinse suit you, do you think?

I have a few suggestions:

Yes contacting the author can work, and indeed sometimes does. However, not all authors are that open with their work, or indeed one suspects, reads their emails regularly! To be fair, they might be restricted from sharing papers if they are available on a subscription database.

On a related note, I often check the author's university webpage - occasionally, just occasionally, they have a link to the paper under their publications.

It is always worth throwing the title into Google scholar. I usually put the title into the search bar followed by 'pdf'. If there is a freely available pdf the paper should appear this way. Don't forget to check the 'all 'x' versions' underneath the link.

Try putting the title into regular Google and by-pass Scholar - I have struck it lucky occasionally with this method.

Posting on this forum has a good success rate. It's probably advisable not to post a request for a paper at the weekend given that the forum is less busy at that time. Your paper request can get lost at the weekend although Reenie is very good at bumping threads up (up)

Re electronic journals and databases - universities pay very large sums of money for these. Therefore, utilise your contacts in other universities. Don't assume that just because your uni has one database and another uni the same database listed on their library website, that the two unis have the same level of access. This is not always the case.

Linked to the previous point - I generally start with the electronic journals. However, if I don't get the paper there, I usually go into to the actual database and check that way. You would imagine that one would automatically cross check with the other but that is not always the case.

Finally, don't always believe what you read! For example, if you're searching for a 2002 paper but your uni electronic journal portal states the journal is available only from 2008 onwards, check anyway. These electronic journals and databases have to be constantly updated and it could be a case that the updates are behind. Always worth a check!

Hope this helps somewhat but I would be interested in hearing other opinions.

It's available via Springer database; not my database of choice tbh! Afraid I can only access that journal (in Eng and in German) from 2001 onwards. The author has it cited on a pdf of his own publications and presentations with his email address at the top. Might be worth an email to him enquiring after it??? Nothing ventured, nothing gained... ;-)

Sorry Larry, tried electronic journals in three different libraries but in each, access to that that journal was from 1999 onwards. Found this available on the web which might be of some use to you in the interim if you haven't already seen it:

I had my eye on a pair of shoes for a year before I submitted my PhD. I decided to wait until my viva to buy them; they would be my viva shoes! I was very tempted to buy them last Christmas but resisted tempation and said to myself "no, wait until 'v' day as per original plan". Two days before my viva in I went to buy my shoes but they were gone :-(. I had to make do with another pair which although nice were not 'the' pair. Passed my viva though so maybe it turned out for the best :p

Skig, I am desperately sorry to hear that, I had wondered how you had gotten on. I hope they give you good instructions re what they want you to do to pass on your resubmit. I can't think of anything else to say to you; I really feel for you.

Put the feet up for a few days to regroup, get your viva report, resubmit and show them that they should have given it to you the first time around.

Hope all else is good with you, pregnancy wise, at the moment.

Agree with checking with your airline re baggage allowance - many have moved from weight toa per piece allowance. Even still there is usually a maximum weight per piece. In my day there was a max weight of 52kg per piece. Also depending on your airline there might be a special baggage allowance for those emigrating. Again in my airline days which was eh, ahem quite a while ago, we had a special excess baggage allowance for those emigrating. I used to be very flexible about it but I imagine nowadays it all has to be predone. I had a quick check and both BA and QF have some sort of baggage allowance - might be worth checking further. Def organise anything like this before you arrive at the airport as the operational staff have very limited discretion about these things. In my day...

My son who has recently returned after a year abroad advises to check out what shops there are in the area you'll be living in. He had to furnish an unfurnished apartment and says he wasted a lot of time and ultimately money trying to figure out where to buy a bed etc.
