PhD selection procedure

You may be eligible if you can pay top-up fees i.e. the difference between 'home' fees and international fees (this would be about £8K per year in my institution). Best to contact the supervisors to clarify your eligibility before submitting a full application.

Which PhD should I choose?
A

If you go into academia, then you will need to be prepared for job insecurity and relatively poor wages. Perhaps concentrate on careers in industry instead.

making a conference poster in powerpoint - help!
A

I always do my own posters in PowerPoint but I just set the size of the slide to A0 and zoom in to work on each section. Good luck!

He should very definitely wear a suit.

How many postdocs have you applied for?
A

Hi Pea and Andy

Note of caution...whilst I don't want to be depressing or alarmist, don't expect postdoc-ing to be in anyway easier or less work than doing a PhD! Ok, so you don't have to write another thesis but you have to write papers and grant applications galore and unlike PhD days, you tend not to be concentrating on one project but have multiple projects (and are trying to write papers from your PhD too!) and teaching/supervising commitments too. I foolishly told my partner things would be easier (in terms of having more time) when the PhD was finished but that simple hasn't been the case (so far). That said, I wouldn't want to be doing anything else!! Good luck with the job hunting!

thesis proof reading
A

Your supervisors are there to comment on the subject matter/structure/validity of the thesis, and you could get a friend/fellow student/helpful post-doc/anyone vaguely literate to read through and spot typos/bad grammar for you. You shouldn't really need to get a paid proof-reader - I certainly don't know anyone who has.

MPhil examination- how long it takes to arrange it
A

It is arranged just like a PhD viva i.e. there are at least 2 examiners, one internal and one external. The time taken to arrange a viva is variable but will include the time taken to 1) have your proposed examining team approved by the university and 2) find a date which is mutually convenient to both examiners and yourself! Good luck

Would a work reference help u get a scholarship?
A

How have you tried to contact your lecturers? It's unlikely that they will all be on hols at exactly the same time for the same duration (although yes, we are into the silly season when it does become difficult to get hold of people!). Someone else in your faculty should be able to construct an academic reference for you based on your transcript. I think an academic ref will be important so you should do your best to get one in addition to the employer ref. An employer ref will be very helpful though, PhDs are in many ways much more like a (highly demanding) job than an academic course.

Good luck with the viva Brian!
A thesis should have an odd number of chapters...?
A

Weird...never heard of that! Mine had 7 but purely coincidental!

I hate footnotes
A

Do your appendices count towards the word limit? My appendices didn't and hence, they were huge (separate volume!)

Lab coats. . .
A

Doh! There goes my potential student! Great to hear that you've found a place though Matthew, well done

We still haven't got our studentship advertised, taking an age (uni paper work etc)...
