Sorry, I tried to fill this in but you didn't give me any options to say I don't use social media for job hunting! I guess you're only interested in people who do use it (and young people as well by the look of the age ranges). Hope you get some useful data from the survey, anyway.

Ooooh, been invited for an interview for the job I was asked to reapply for a couple of weeks ago. This makes me very happy! I'd love the job, so fingers crossed. The interview isn't until 11 September so loads of time to get anxious about it...

Benyaya, I agree about the two projects thing, and the two legs analogy describes it perfectly! Hope you manage to get some decent sleep.

And Skig, I'm not at all surprised the pregnancy is making you tired! Do look after yourself.

I'm struggling to make myself do any more work today, but I know I need to. I've made some progress with the data analysis but am now stuck, so will come back to that fresh tomorrow. Time to get on with one of my journal articles, when I can summon the energy!

Morning all!

I managed to get loads more done yesterday by swapping to a completely different task later in the day, so I'm going to try the same thing again today. This morning I'll work on my data analysis, and later I'll return to editing one of my journal articles.

Good luck to everyone else today!

Journal submission, naming potential reviewers?
Avatar for Batfink27

I'm just facing this with a journal article I'm about to submit (though it doesn't say they have to be in a country other than my own!)

My supervisor's advice was to look through my references for people who would really understand what I was writing, and also to look through previous issues of the targeted journal for similar papers that could be cited and then the authors suggested as reviewers. Might involve adding a couple of citations to the paper, but could be worth it. As well as really understanding your area, people you've cited (as long as you're not slating them!) might look on your paper more positively because they're name-checked, and also people who have had a paper published in the journal previously should have an idea of what the journal likes.

I guess if you really don't know anything about the people you could draw up a shortlist and then google/google scholar them to see how eminent and widely-published they are (someone who's only ever published one paper might not be a great choice...)

Hope that helps!

Hello everyone! Good to see lots of people actively getting on with stuff.

I've ground to a halt with my stats analysis, but have made some progress, so that's good. Going to look at restructuring my opening/background chapter now.

Morning everyone!

Back from a good long swim this morning and now ready to start work. I want to spend half the day working on my data analysis - finishing off my notes on what I need to do and making a start on the actual analysis - and the other half of the day starting to rewrite the Background chapter of my thesis. Time to make some real progress!

Questionnaire - Please participate

Completed the questionnaire. It's quite manipulative text you've used there - I wish there had been somewhere for me to state that text like that makes me much less likely to donate to charity because such obvious manipulation just makes me angry, even if I support the cause. Good luck with the survey though!

Morning everyone!

Yesterday was a frustrating and unsuccessful day for me, making progress but failing to finish the two papers I really needed to finish. I think I need some distance from the one I've been working on for the last couple of weeks, so I'm not going to look at that for a couple of days. This mornign I'm going to try to get the other paper finished, and then this afternoon I'll get on with my data analysis.

I find the tomatoes method only really works when I'm writing a chapter or something like that - something where I expect to be doing the same task for several hours at a time. If I'm swapping between small tasks I tend to do one task, take a very short break, then get onto the next task, so a similar thing really, just not ruled by a timer.

Morning everyone!

Had a lovely weekend with MrBatfink and now really don't want to do any work. But needs must.

My plan for today is to try to finish the changes to the journal paper I was working on last week, and also to look at amendments for another journal article that my co-author has been working on. It would be great to get those two things out of the way today to clear the decks for getting back to data analysis tomorrow, but we'll see how it goes. Hoping to get to swimming later as well.

Welcome, Benyaya, and I hope the thread helps - I know I find it a really good way to motivate myself.

Button, good luck with it! I see the background in the same way as Skig, it's the bare basics about why your topic is worth even looking at.

And Skig, you too! The only way I know to deal with the bits you're talking about is to get a big blank piece of paper and do some brainstorming, and then from that I come up wth bullet points for what I need to include. Then I sort those into a logical order, then try to write them into sentences, then build up into paragraphs, and hey presto, it's done.

Anyway - I didn't quite get my journal paper finished, but all that's left to do is small changes to the abstract, a paragraph on aims and objectives, and then some changes to the discussion and conclusions to bring out the points emphasised by the new structure.

Grrr, I obviously jinxed myself by saying I'd have no problems finishing this article by 5pm! Re-ordering it has changed the points I need to bring out of some of my analysis - it's a good thing really, it's much more logical this way and supports my argument more strongly, but it's more work than I expected. Hopefully I will still get it done by 5, but it's going to be tight.

Morning Skig!

Hope today is a better day for you. But don't feel bad about the amount you achieved then - today is a new day, after all.

I didn't finish my journal article re-write yesterday, but shouldn't have any problems finishing it by today's 5pm deadline. If I have time I'd also like to go back to writing the idiot's notes on the new stats method that I started on Tuesday, but we'll see how it goes.

Blimey, good luck with the editing you too, sounds like lots of use of the delete button today!

I've just been swimming, 2km for the second time this week, so feeling energised now. Today I want to get as close to finishign the rewrite of the journal paper as I can - it's be great to get it all done but I won't beat myself up if I don't quite manage it.

That sounds like a good plan, Sneaks.

I'm wokring my way through changes to my journal paper. I've reordered the sections and am changing some of the tables now, and I don't think the rewrite will be as bad as I thought. Famous last words, of course!
