Legal profession PhD
B

Hi

Is there anyone out there who has put together a proposal where the subject matter relates to legal practice/technology, change management etc. in professional service firms who I could have a chat with?

After 25 years away from academia I am trying to put together a proposal!

Thanks for the replies. I am an ex-lawyer and interested in the business model of professional service firms.

I have put together a draft proposal and I have found a business school lecturer who is kindly trying to help me get the proposal correct.

I sent hom the draft - but he says that it is presneted more in consultancy mode and that I need to think 'in PhD mode'. Not sure what that means.

He has also said that he would want he would 'like to see is a research question that engages more directly with the literature and some existing body of theory'.

I am somewhat lost and confused!

It would help if I could find someone who has prepared a proposal or indeed who has a PhD which is in the area I am looking to research. I have searched the web but not found anyone as yet!

How much time does a PhD take

Hi

How do people organise their time researching on a part-time basis?

How much time a day do you spend researching - and on what activities - and how many days a week?

Not sure if the PhD is right for me

I concur with pm133, I am 55 years of age and run my own business as a sole trader.

I have been wanting to undertake a PhD for many years. Not for career reasons - for personal reasons - to 'finish my education' - and I have a real+passion for the area I want to research - dating back some 20 years.

My business generates enough income for me to survive operating on a part-time business and I am hoping that will give me the time required to undertake a part-time PhD.

My last period in academia was 25 years ago when I got a Masters and I am struggling to put together a proposal and to understand exactly what the various Unis want to see in the proposal so I am concerned that I will not be accepted anywhere. I don't know anyone who has done or is doing a PhD so its all somewhat a shot in the dark!

Will have to see if anyone will take me on!

Applying for PostDoc Research - choosing an institution close by?
B

I have applied to a University 2 hours away from home to start a part-time PhD and been told that I need only be on site for 12 days in the first year.

It's not only the travel to the Uni which will be involved in my research but also to a specialist library to access materials not available on the web - the library is 4 hours drive from home!

51 year old looking for PhD
B

Hi

I am new on here. For many years I have wanted to do a PhD but have not got far as I don't have funds to support myself/pay fees for 3 or 4 years.

I am 51 years of age and getting a PhD would complete my life. I attained an MBA in 1992 and an Honours Degree in Law in 1983. I am not academically brilliant - but I enjoy studying and I think that my many years in industry in a wide variety of roles will stand me in good stead.

The big questions - for someone aged 51 with no money and a mediocre first degree:

1. Am I likely to be accepted for a DBA?
2. Am I likely to secure any funding - enough to cover fees and to live on (I have 2 kids one of whom is special needs and disabled).
3. I see no point applying for a course unless I have funding secured - or is that the wrong way of going about it?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
