I handed in January - Viva in April (minor corrections - letter outlining them received 3 weeks later) - Completed corrections and handed in in July, they were signed off 3 weeks later by my internal - I was given 1 month to get the thesis bound and handed in - pass list arrived last week (Mid Sept).

I probably could have shaved 2 or 3 months off the time I took to do the corrections and get the thesis bound, but my motivation to jump through these last hoops was surprisingly low!!

I feel for you in your situation. I can only think of a couple of ideas that may help:

Can you save a percentage of your funding each month now to go towards the first couple of months next year?

Also, it is possible to work part time while working full time on a PhD. I have worked shifts (non-academic job) on the weekends throughout my full time PhD to earn extra money. I know others have managed to get some teaching/research work at their university alongside their PhD too. A part time job may be one option to consider further. It is difficult to manage both, but not impossible.

As previous posters have said, other sources of funding may be worth pursuing too.

I'm not sure about whether universities consider these types of supervision adequate or not, but I have had a lot of supervision with one of my supervisors over the telephone. To be honest, I find it can be just as helpful as a face to face supervision. I am also a distance student, so I gain 2.5 extra hours of study time by not having to travel in to uni for supervision. I also find it easier to discuss issues this way as there is no eye contact. For me telephone is better than Skype, since I can still have my dog on my lap, look a mess, put more wood on the fire (etc), and I've even opened the door to the postman mid supervision before!

As long as you're getting good, helpful supervision, I think the form it comes in is irrelevant.

I haven't posted for a while. I was a bit annoyed at myself for not working as quickly as I would have liked :-( My excuses (and I'm sticking to them :-p) = school holidays, ill children, procrastination and a 4 day conference. Anyway I now have a full draft thesis!! My sups are reading through it over the next week or two. I expect a fair bit of editing will be needed, but at least it's written! :-)

I'm hoping to submit by late November/early December (eeek!)

I had quite a good week last week, but need to turn up the tempo again this week!

I have one goal:

1) Finish chapter 8!

tanemahuta - yes I'm still aiming to finish in September - it may be a bit ambitious, but I'm going to give it my all and see how far I get! If I need longer to improve the depth and quality of my work I will take it. Sept will be the end of my 3 years, if I have to take another month or two to improve the thesis I will. I would like to finish ASAP though! I hope you're getting on okay rewriting your chapters.

Liah - Well done for your work on your controller! I hope you get on well with the main controller :)

Trin - the BBQ was fab! It was for my son's rugby team. We had hot weather and a pool, which kept the children happy! Good luck with drafting your results chapters (and the job chat!).

wanderingbit - I hope you managed to achieve your goals and to enjoy the wedding :)

Anyway I got Chapter 7 finished and sent to sups yesterday, so at least some progress last week. I want to get started on chapter 8 today and hopefully have a fair bit written by next weekend! So one major goal for this week:
1) Write as much of Chapter 8 as I can (at least 6,000 words)!

Fingers crossed some sort of momentum will sweep me up! I will probably just plan the chapter today as off out to a BBQ later.

Okay So I've had a slow morning, but this afternoon I'm going to go for it so goals:

1) Amend Table and add in extra details
2) Work out averages, ranges and other important factors
3) Finish half completed section of writing
4) Read through and edit chp so far

I think that will do for now - I hope all is going well for everyone else

Btw - my paper got accepted - no more revisions :) so happy!!

I've not had a very productive writing week, but I have revised my paper and uploaded it to the journal again - yay!!
I'm at work both days over the weekend, but hoping I can cram in an hour or two of writing at some point to catch up a bit.

Okay so I didn't get anything else done over the weekend - Saturday I went on a bike ride and a bee stung my tongue!!!! So Saturday evening I didn't feel up to much except moaning! Sunday I had my Dad over for a meal and spent the day mucking the, previously neglected, house out before he arrived!

So goals for today:
1) I had an email from a journal stating my paper can be accepted if I amend a few aspects - yay!!! So I want to amend it today ready for my sups to check

2) Incorporate sups comments into Chapter 6
