I would say go for it! An amazing opportunity and experience. And you would have both a PhD and by the end a high competence in a language that few Westener's ever have.
I did part of my PhD overseas in Europe and there were a number of staff at the institute who were Germans who had studied for their humanities PhD's partly in China or using Chinese material. They are in huge demand and on-pulse right now as research bodies are increasingly interested in funding projects in this direction involving exchange...

(puts cultural historian /historian of science hat on)
I'm fascinated by the idea of beauty as a idea and the way in which "it" is a confluence of a wide range of cultural traits and biological imperatives (that are themselves mutable)...Keep_Calm, there are a number of good histories /popular sciences of beauty which might interest you -loads revealed on a google search. Later this year Umberto Eco's "On Beauty: A History of a Western Idea" is being published.
(puts everyday hat on)
When I go to the gym I am usually in awe of many of the people there and feel a bit self-conscious. Though as lots of people have said, sometimes beautiful people are less than satisfied with themselves.
Good luck now Wally! You're so so close! (up)

Don't worry about it, it is fine! Enjoy your holiday! I know many funded people who moved-overseas for a few months for family/research and that was considered to be fine. And you are/will be spending most of your year in the Uk.
Sent.
Will email it to you! :)
Thanks all!
Good luck Ce-CF!!! - if we have met I would have been male, tall, fairly scrawny, with dark hair and in the humanities. I worked in the library for a while in the first year before I had funding so you might have seen me there. I know one other person who used to use this forum clocked who I was in real life! ;)
Thanks all! Yes, I'll still be hanging around esp. in the postdoc section as I am going to be working in a university in a postdoctoral capacity. Of course I'll still check out the PhD life section as I dispense with my pearls of wisdom! ;)
I was expecting a page by page "picking at bones" viva and it was far from it. If you are aware of drawbacks in your thesis (percieved or actual) make sure that you show in the viva that you acknowledge them and know how to improve on them - defend those you can - and concede to others. Best of luck
Also, as somebody who had trigeminal neuralgia in the past for an extended period of time during my BA and MA I really sympathise and hope your symptoms are controlled or that surgery has/will take place.
Thanks all! I feel relieved it is over and that I didn't fail but otherwise it doesn't seem real and I keep questioning whether it was really good enough and so on. But mostly just relieved. Doesn't feel much different though. It just happened.
Chrisrolinski PhD Humanities 2006-2010 Pass July 2010

Not long now.......tried printing out train tickets (viva is other side of country at different uni) and bloody ink cartridge is exhausted! :-s Not long until Thursday now.
Trying not to panic. Feel very prone to tummy ache now and want to sleep to pretend it isn't coming. But at the same time, want it to be over with!
Just because you haven't heard back from the AHRC / university don't assume you have been unsuccessful. I heard back in late August. And several friends who heard postive news before found out in August too. There is plenty of time - it is only late July.
Best of luck with the interview.
Not long until Thurs now. Checking suit is clean and neat. :$
