Post-Viva Blues
D

Hi guys,

thought this would fit in here as it is still part of the PhD experience.

Having passed the viva with "minor" corrections before Christmas I am now going through the list of corrections and amendments. Although termed "minor" it still seems to be a lot to do. I am not talking about typos, grammar, language etc. but the parts that say something like "contextualise this"..."expand on that"...."explain in more detail why...". and so on. It shows that it isn't over just yet and that there can be a different kind of limbo after the viva. You know you don't have to do the viva again but you still need to do a good bit of writing. And, this may sound petty, it also may affect other parts of the thesis which are ok, such as new page numbering, new table of contents etc. It just adds up.

This sounds like a rant and maybe it is because I just don't get the feeling that it's done and I absolutely hate to have to revisit my thesis and write again (I'd rather be concentrating on finishing a paper, plan my next research etc.).

Oh, and a happy New Year! ,-)

Party thread for Viva Passers!

Congratulations everyone! And thanks to the congratulants. Got PhD awarded with minor corrections (although I dread the corrections list).

A bit of an anti-climax. I still don't feel like it is really over yet. :p

Viva Vibes for Friday (11th December)

Quote From olivia:

Pass, minor corrections!!!!!! (up)(up)(up)(up) and the viva wasn't even horrible. In fact, it was almost enjoyable!!! :)))))

Best wishes for anyone else with a viva today!

Congrats Dr Olivia! Same here, passed with minor corrections as well. But have to say it was hard enough for me. :$

Viva Vibes for Friday (11th December)

Seems there are quite a couple of people here who'll go through their viva tomorrow (me included). So best of luck and the best vibes for all of you! :-) It'll be fine and a great day for celebrating (weekend!).

Anyone else waiting on their viva?
D

Same here, have my viva this week. Have a list of corrections prepared and hope for the best :$

How clever are you?
D

I didn't do well in school at all. Repeated twice and still didn't get enough points to do what I wanted to do. Got to where I am in a roundabout way (National service, unpaid internships, etc). No degree, no masters. I'm preparing for my viva exam in early December now. Must be doing something right. ;-)

I did it!!!! yipeeeeee (My Phd Viva story)

Oh wow Lara! Conratulations! The burdne is lifted. You must feel ecstatic. Well done Dr. L. :-)(up)8-)

How interactive is this forum?
D

Another possibility is that posters move on after a while. Some get their PhD's and are happy and don't need the forum anymore, others leave a PhD and don't want to visit again. There may be many reasons. I think it is the nature of the beast. Most people post when they have hit a low, want some advice on certain problems or just need some encouragement to finish the final stages of their thesis. Maybe, if the forum had a post-doc section people may migrate there afterward completing their degree. Who knows?

Post-thesis twilight zone.........

hey Danzig. i'm joining you! i recieved a letter telling me who my examiners are, and that my thesis has been sent to them! yikes!!! i am sooooooooooo scared :$

Hi Lara,

that's great news! The waiting is almost over. ;) I just hope everything happens before Christmas. I don't mind the conferring ceremony taking place sometime in the next year as long as the viva is out of the way. ;-)

Best,
Danzig

As from today, I join the people in post-submission limbo. I submitted my thesis this morning and as far as I know the Assessment office has already prepared them to be send out to the examiners. Happy days! Thanks to all who replied in my other threads when I was giving out about writing up etc.... 8-)

Enjoying writing up?!?
D

Same here. I am coming to the end of my writing up period. Have to hand in the complete draft to my supervisors by the end of next week and submit the corrected draft for examination Mid-September.

The write-up is hell for me. Hate the thesis at this stage. I know I will love it again when it gets me through the viva but that does not take away from the feelings I have at the moment. Love the research, hate the thesis, love writing papers though. Strange.

Quick referencing query
D

You can always use the complete version which is "et alii". As was said before et al. or et alii is already the plural and it would be incorrect to add an 's.

Finally almost really done - post viva land

Quote From Smilodon:

I don't have the complete list yet but I have one of the overall reports which talks about typos and additional references. I strongly suspect though, that when I get the final list there will be some additional requests to do with clarifying and annotating various tables and figures.

Thanks. That's what I would think of as "minor". I hope I can get through with corrections like this. How's the first morning after the celebrations? Hope your head doesn't suffer. ;-)

Congratulations Doctor!

:-)

The relief must be enormous. Just a question: What are the minor corrections (did they tell you or indicate)? Grammar, and stuff or rewriting paragraphs etc? I think everyone sees minor corrections differently.

I'm worried that the swine flu pandemic will affect examiners traveling to vivas etc. That would delay thinks till sometime next year or even further. I know I am being selfish and callous but I don't care about the swine flu per se, just worried about getting the viva date after submitting and for that I need my examiners to travel. :-(
