In fact, I don't know whether or not my friend's corrections are right? Most of them is missing 'the'. He is Canadian and the proofreader is American, I don't know if this is the reason.

Thank you Aisling. what really annoyed me is that the proofreader was a doctor in English literature and she is a proofreader of another university jornal. She was really expensive. I thought I did my best to avoide the typos.

My viva after 17 days and I submitted my thesis since December. A friend suggested to make mock viva. I sent him the introduction and the conclusion. Today, he sent me the text with lot of silly typing mistakes and wrote that if you want to dicuss them feel free to call me. The result is that I am too sad and disappointed.

Hello, many thanks for your replies. I am still working on the my Viva presentation. This is my plan:

- thanks for the jury 30 sec
- practical importance of the topic
- the definition of the principle I studied
- the case- law I worked on and the number of cases against Switzerland (where I am doing my PhD)
- the objects of the study
- main findings
- recommendations
- up to date information, mentioned the judgements that were delivered after I submitted my thesis 1min

Any advice? I am still not know what to talk about methodology. Is it enough to mention thay I mainly relied on the interpretation of the principle by the case-law of two treaty bodies. I compare between their related case-law to define which of them provide better protection and to what extent there is an interaction between these two bodies.

any advice?

Quote From IntoTheSpiral:
In terms of asking questions, it took me a while to realise that my brain works best and is smartest when I have had time to process and think about a topic. I don't think fast enough during talks, so unless the topic is something I have spent time thinking about before I am not likely to come up with an interesting question during the talk. I find it hard to listen to the talk and process my own criticisms/comments at the same time. So I choose to listen and focus and do the thinking bit later.

It took me a while to realise that this is completely okay. It doesn't mean I am less smart than the rest of the audience, or that I didn't understand the material. It just means that I need to take that extra reflection time, to organise my thoughts in a way that I am confident to ask the question. My brain just prefers to work slightly differently to some others. And because I suffer from depression/anxiety I am absolutely not going to ask a question until I have had a chance to think it through properly.

It's annoying. But something I just have to deal with. My usual course of action is to approach the speaker after the talk and say something like "I really enjoyed your talk, and want to talk to you about it more in the future when I've had a chance to reflect on what you've said. Would you mind if I emailed you?" I haven't yet had anyone say no to that request. And in fact, have had some very productive email conversations about interesting topics and have followed up with potential future collaborations as a result.

Thank you for this reply. You help me to understand what is going on with me in the last few years.

I read online that I should talk about the methodology! What does it mean? My thesis is on human rights. It studies and compares the case-law of two courts in a certain context..

I cannot read my thesis, it is a punishment. I don't have motivation to prepare for the viva. I waste my time playing with my twins or on facebook. :(

Many thanks Alisling for your advice. In fact I'm living in french speaking country. However, English is not the mother tongue of the members of the jury. Some of them are German others are French. This may help.
