Grrr yes that's definately up there on my list! Mine made me recall an article I submitted to a journal because he said there were major problems with it (cue meeting where I find out *at length* I'm totally rubbish etc. etc.) So I recalled the article, made the changes and then resubmitted it only to find that yes, they'll publish, but only when I complete major changes... many of them back to what I'd done in the first place... I'd have done better without his meddling!

Hi! Following on from Lulu's post 'not getting on with supervisor', I was wondering what's the worst thing people in the forum have had to endure from their supervisor...? Any horrific comments? Unbelievable behaviour?

Lulu - don't be afraid to change your supervisor - you're not very far in and already she is bringing you down - can you imagine another 2.5 years of shutting up and putting up?! And might this harm your output? Plenty of people change supervisors, and personality and other clashes are common. There'll be something along those lines in your departmental PhD handbook (as well as how to change sups etc.) Having said that, I have a horrible supervisor but I won't change as he is the only specialist in my methodology in the department, and his input is too useful to my research to get rid of him. If that wasn't the case I'd be out of there like a shot! So my overall advice is: If her input is worth the pain, then keep her. Otherwise - ditch her ASAP!!

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum:)

I have about 12 months until I plan to submit so I'm only just starting to seriously look at what's available, but the plan is to work as a practitioner and expert witness in my field (criminology). Although a PhD is definately a must for credibility in this kind of work, the main reason I started was because my funding application was accepted and I really enjoy my topic (and a challenge!)

I totally agree with Otto - I'm not planning to stay in academia or continue researching after my PhD... but I do love my subject. For me it's a great chance to do something purely for yourself for three years, the only chance we'll get to be so selfish! (and get paid for it And the first thing I'll do is change my title on my bank cards etc and generally show it off!
