Independent research prior to applying to masters program

B

To set myself apart from grad school applicants i thought i'd be a good idea to together a group of fellow prospective student and current student and do my own social research project or study. Schools and employers are always looking for ‘experience’ and ‘initiative’. I guess this is my way of gain experience and showing initiative.

Do you think it’s a good idea? Do you think it’s a bad idea?

Thanks

I forgot to include that the project would be really small scaled. I woun't want to bite of more than i can chew.

It would look good on applications but the independent research would have to be peer-reviewed to really be accepted as a high-quality research. Perhaps it would be best to tailor the research to a particular journal or conference and see if it is accepted and then take things from there?
