I started a PhD in September, and quickly realised that the research area wasn't what I had in mind, but resolved to carry on as I felt I was capable and could become more interested in the research with time, I got on with the work and was doing well. However since about December a number of complicated events and personal problems have meant I would like to return to my home town, and my lack of interest in the research has meant I have no real reason to stay. There is a good university in my home town and I would ideally like to begin another PhD there. I am funded by a UK research council, and wondered if the fact that I'd quit this PhD would affect my chances of getting another studentship?
I have a first class degree at undergraduate level and have had a good relationship with my current PhD supervisor, who had no idea of my initial lack of interest in the area - the only reason I'm quitting as far as he is concerned is my desire to return home.
Hi, I can't advise on the funding issue as I am not in the UK, but I do have a couple of comments.
Firstly, you need to change your user name, especially if you intend to actually make a go of a PhD.
Secondly, why did you start a PhD in an area that you weren't interested in? You should probably keep that part quiet if you do decide to quit, but either way I don't think it would look very good at this early stage. Hopefully somebody else on here will have some more information on the likely funding implications.
hehe, the username is a song, it's my username on almost everything...
The research group I'm in work on stuff I was into, and I thought I would also be doing that, but I was been put on this other project, I probably would have got into it eventually but my interest has suffered as a result of the other stuff - I never told anyone I wasn't interested though and my supervisor has been pretty impressed with me so far as far as I can tell.
