I am doing PhD in VLSI design. It have been one month that I started my PhD and still I Don't find any proper direction to proceed. I find no papers of my subject or the only few papers I find are very badly written giving no clear idea of their background. Normally, for how much time should I have such feeling? Is it normal to feel lost...

oh yes, it is very normal to feel lost.you have too little papers, I have way too many. Talk to your supervisor. He/She got money for your PhD by proposing for it with a written outline of the work to be done.
