Is there a way of automatically counting the number of words in a Word document AND exclude words in tables?

Not in my version of Word.. just hold the cmd key and exclude the tables. Or add the tables as pictures - that won't be counted.

Not that I've found, only these work-arounds:

Save document, delete all figures and tables and reference list, do word count, exit WITHOUT saving.

Or, copy and paste all paragraphs into new document.

Thanks TreeofLife, do you know, does the Table caption count as part of the table or not?

Our graduate school are extremely strict on word count.

I didn't count mine in the word count, but I only rounded to the nearest 1000 words in the end anyway, so probably didn't make much difference, plus my uni weren't strict and I was 10,000 below word count anyway.

If your uni is that strict, I would expect them to detail exactly what they include in word counts somewhere.
