Confusion between "framework" and "guidelines" - Is there a difference between the two?
F

Thanks for this Rick. I'm pretty sure what I have is not a protocol. I will post a more definitive answer about framework vs guidelines if I can find it.

Confusion between "framework" and "guidelines" - Is there a difference between the two?
F

Hi Guys,

I'm a Computer Science student with a quick terminology question. For my thesis, I have developed what I have termed to be a "framework", comprising of a set of recommendations resulting from the research, and a table of other information. This

My supervisor feels that the term "framework" may be a too strong for what I have done. I was wondering the difference between the terms "guidelines" and "framework" in scientific means. Do they mean the same thing?

Thanks

online communities/networking..am i the only person in the world to not have joined one?
F

I feel the same as you guys - I have no interest in contacting/being contacted by people who weren't even that friendly at school! You'd keep in touch with the people you like anyway.

To answer your question, I think some people join social networking sites to reconnect with those they lost touch with. Others join just to show off how many friends they have!!

ADMIS at LSE - MSc in Analysis, Design and Management of Information Systems

Hi Guys,

Not sure if it is off much help to you but an old friend who I have lost touch with did this course in 1999-2000. He found the course quite easy as we had studied Information Systems & Computer Science at undergraduate level. I do remember him mentioning that there were lots of case studies to go through and discuss, and the programming language at the time they used was Java. I think he was really happy with the fact that he received a Masters from a very prestigious university. Best of luck with your course!

Research fellow, research assistant, research scholar - What is the difference?

Thanks Shani. That's helped a lot. I am from England ironically, but just a little confused about positions as I know someone who already had a PhD but is employed as a Research Assistant.

Research fellow, research assistant, research scholar - What is the difference?
F

Hi Guys,

I'm hopefully finishing off my PhD soon and interested in pursuing postdoctoral research. I've seen a few UK-based jobs advertised however, they all have different titles. I am clueless on the difference between these posts, and which ones would be suitable for a PhD who is about to complete (no postdoc experience). Could someone please explain to me the difference between research fellow, research assistant, research scholar?

Thanks.

can u help me?? im in kind of a dilemma

Hi, I think you should contact a few universities overseas with strong biotechnology departments and let them know that you have the qualifications and some work experience. They'll be able to advise you better. You may not need to do the GRE before doing a PhD (depending on where you want to study). Likewise, you may not need to do the MPhil either. Best of luck!

Need Help In Finding An MSc!!!

Hi Amina, an MSc in Bioinformatics could be useful to you as it could combine your CS and biological knowledge. Check out the course at Ulster University and ask them about funding. Best of luck. http://www.bioinformatics.ulster.ac.uk/-PGD-MSc-Bioinformatics-.html

Name ordering query on an academic paper
F

Hi Guys,

I was wondering the order that names should go on a paper? Should the supervisor's name come directly after your name (if the student is the main author), or should the order represent the actual contributions made to the paper?

Thanks

Master After Master degree?
F

Hi Guys,

I'm considering doing some further study after finishing an engineering-related PhD, just to get some training in other areas of interest.

I was wondering if anyone knew the significance of a Master-After-Masters degree (they seem quite popular in Netherlands/Belgium). Do you know if the degree is considered equal or higher to a conventional British MA/MSc?

Thanks.

Query about when to stop research and start writing-up?
F

Thanks for all the info guys...I'm a Computer Scientist but not getting much in the way of guidance from my supervisor generally. I think I've still got quite of research to do before I get to the writing-up stage tho!

Query about when to stop research and start writing-up?
F

Hi Guys, I am entering my third and final year of funding for my PhD. I was just wondering how do you know when you have enough research to start writing-up? Does your supervisor just tell you to stop and write-up, or is this a decision that I should make for myself? Thanks.
