Well done teegs! Are you celebrating?

litphdgirl, congratulations and well done! :-)

Zutterfly, I'm doing some teaching. But I will need to crack on to find a permanent job.

I am having some informal meetings this week about casual teaching across a few different institutions starting next semester- should hopefully buy me some time to put in more job applications for something more secure rather than bits and pieces of income from different places on zero hours contracts.

This sounds like a good plan. I've also got a couple of temporary things lined up for a few months before I get a proper job. It takes the pressure off a little.

That sounds like an awful experience, Zutterfly, with the only possible silver lining being that you don't have to work with such a rude and impatient person. I always think that if someone comes across so badly before you even get the job, things can only get worse from there.

I'd second that! I've never heard of anyone being so rude! Awful behaviour.

I believe for the majority of jobs in academia, they already have someone in mind for the job, and are just interviewing to go through the official formal process.

Hello all,

New to the final year support thread but I am about 2 months out from submission and feel so exhausted right now. Need some kind words of encouragement....

Hi and welcome :)

You have come this far, you can do it! Have you made a list of what is left to do? Where are you in terms of the right up? Do you have a submission plan written up?

What has happened Hugh? PM me if you like. Rant away :)

Thanks! I will PM you :)

I have not used a proof reader for my thesis yet Hugh but I have used the one I will be using for this in the past for another piece of writing. She did just that- put any changes in MS word track changes leaving me to approve each amendment.

Thanks, just wanted to double check :)

Feel like having a rant. A huge rant. I am leaving academia for good. Can't wait to get out.

A PhD thesis with just 2 case studies?

Ask your supervisor to get a second opinion from someone senior in your department, or approach them yourself.

I'm also considering both academia and non-academia, but I am leaning strongly towards non-academia. Actually make that very strongly!

To those of you who have had a proof reader, did the proof reader just use track changes on Word to make corrections?

Well done teegs!! You are just one week away, that's amazing.

I always thought I'd be over the moon when I submit but I think it happens in such gradual steps that by the time you get to submission you feel a bit deflated. I think I'll only truly celebrate until after I've been told I have passed.

I am glad that you are enjoying quiet time Hugh. I thought I would too but I have been really restless actually. I have made a list of about 7 positions to apply for over the next two weeks and I need to learn to get faster with applications as the previous ones took days and days. I have a meeting with a uni I am on zero hours contract with this week to see if they have anything I can do for now.

Looks like you've got a good momentum going. Keep going with that momentum, I think I lost it when I submitted the first draft, I went into a bit of a rest mode.

Did you manage to get good feedback in the end (on the job front?)

I did get good feedback but not a job ;D

Zutterfly, sorry to hear that but well done for getting your draft in. I took a break from applying for jobs. I just needed a breather after the rejections. I'm actually enjoying this quiet time, though I'd probably enjoy it more once the thesis is submitted :)

What is the best way to communicate with sups
H

I send plan/agenda before hand too. So that they can look at it before hand. But sometimes they don't, so don't assume in meeting they have read it, ask them if they have. And then give them time in meeting to.
