Mentioning difficult family members in thesis acknowledgements

Nesrine, that sounds good. The other thing you could is I thank my parents which leaves it a bit ambiguous.

University reputation , supervisor reputation or funding?

I agree with TheEngineer

A more interesting PhD has come along

Definitely speak to him about it face to face, or else you'll regret it.

One semester into a PhD and offered a job
H

I'm on the other side (completed thesis) and I would definitely go for the job. A friend of mine left his PhD and is in a much better job position than I am after having completed PhD.

Hi all, I had my viva last week and passed with minor corrections! It really hasn't sunk in yet but I'm overjoyed. Three months to do the corrections and I'm done.

I really struggled at times throughout this whole process and I really mean it when I say if I can do this then you can too. Just get the words out - pomodoro or go to a thesis boot camp. You can and will do this!

Thanks for all the camaraderie on this forum. Looking back on previous posts and I can't believe I'm done. Will no doubt check in again after corrections. Good luck all finishing up. You can do it!!

congratulations!!! :-) I think you are our 1st to make it through, so well done!

How was the viva?

I agree with you Chickpea, it's also utterly disheartening for people looking for jobs to be continuously rejected!

All the ones I've applied to I felt I was a really good fit. I think I'm going to give myself a time frame to find something in the field I want, and if I don't find it by then, I'm going to look at other sectors.

I am right there with you Hugh, I just applied to three, applied about about 10 in total since my funding ended. I get shortlisted fairly often but never get the post :( Has something in particular happened or is there nothing suitable available?

I've applied for about 15 so far, and have only been shortlisted for 3 so far, and didn't get them. I'm not one to give up quickly but I feel like I should start looking outside of the field. I am tired of being in an uncertain unsettled stage of life :(

Hi, just wanted to have a moan about the job market out there! I think I'm ready to give up! Sod jobs :(

Thesis Corrections...can you re-send them?
H

I agree with TreeofLife, wait to hear back from them in January.

How long did it take for your supervisor to read your draft?

Zutterfly, I've sent you a PM.

How long did it take for your supervisor to read your draft?

Hugh- I was wondering how you were getting on...so did they just return it to you with only 3 chapters read? I'm so angry for you :(

I was angry too, but there's not much i can do.

Most of my chapters were read by one supervisor as I was writing up, and I had made changes based on that. However, I was expecting both my supervisors to read the full thing as a full draft. They didn't, and I am just going to have to go ahead and submit it.

Have you given your supervisors a deadline? Maybe say you have the proofreader booked for X date, and therefore need it back by then.

I waited three months, even then they only read a few chapters. Honestly I have no idea how supervisors get away with it. My sympathies are with you. The only person who has the read the full thing is me and my fabulous proof reader.

Chickpea I'm so relieved to hear you feel that way too. I'm planning to move away to a related but different area altogether. Can't wait to move on from this topic

Hi, how is everyone doing?

Is anyone so sick of their research area that they don't want to hear about it again? I've been invited to a conference to talk about the research, it would be a great opportunity but I just don't want to, I almost feel physically sick at the thought of it. Is this completely abnormal??

Part time PhD

If you've lost interest in the topic, leave it. There's no point putting your life on hold for a PhD you have little interest in.
