New route PhD
J

Hi,

I'm currently looking into new route PhD's in the field of Computing, has anyone on this forum had any experience of this award at all? I don't have a masters award at present and would be looking to start the award with my undergraduate Computing degree. I have managed to find information on the award from a local university - the new route PhD is made of the MRes and PhD. I would be looking to study for the award in part time mode.

Thanks for your time

As I'm just starting out on the research path can anyone recommend any research methods and statistics books that give a overview of the terminology? Much prefer books to websites :-)

Many thanks

Hi everyone,

Well today has been the first meeting with my supervisor for the mres. I have been asked to use refworks to keep track of references and using a mind mapping approach to start forming ideas for research papers and for the final thesis.

What do people think of refworks? Are there any alternatives out there that are better than refworks?

I have also been asked to think about administration early on re ordering and keeping track of papers, etc that I find as I go along. How do you go about this?

Would really appreciate your advice on this.
Thanks :-)

Thanks for the responses, I was using Word 2010 - perhaps I need to do reinstall. The thesis included lots of diagrams, coding, user manuals and appendices - the area was xml for business.

Hi Guys,

I know its a strange question - but how do you manage your Thesis - do you use Word? The reason for asking is - when I completed my undergraduate dissertation it was approx ~200 pages in length and became unworkable in the end using Word as it kept crashing.

How do you guys assemble your thesis? Do you keep chapters as separate documents and then combine them at the end or keep everything in a main document?

Would appreciate your thoughts on this.

Many thanks,
Jo

Hello!
J

Just an update I'm due to start in September 2011, can't wait :-) Hopefully if all goes well in 2 years I will be starting a Phd in the same subject.

Hello!
J

Just wanted to introduce myself as I have been a long time follower of this forum.

I'm a mature student (28) and I have been accepted onto a MRes in Computer Science part time :)

Postgraduate Applications 2011
J

I thought it would be useful to start up a thread relating to postgraduate applications 2011.

As for me, I have just applied to study for a MRes in Computer Science at Staffordshire University. The university is local to me, I have already studied there in p/t mode and 15% discount for being an existing student

What are other people doing???

MRes prior to PhD?
J

Quote From bleebles:

I'm doing an MRes, and intend to start a PhD (not started yet though). I never considered doing an MA - they seemed too much like my first degree. I wanted more independence and to research exactly what I wanted. I expect it will prepare me better for my PhD too.

Many thanks Bleebles, like you the thought of studying repeated modules at a Masters level does not interest me in the slightest.

MRes prior to PhD?

Has anyone on this forum studied a MRes before undertaking a PhD? I am looking to go down this route rather than taking a MSc in Computer Science.

I would be interested in people's views/experiences.

Thanks
