I don't think anyone cares about the rules really ...

as long as you dont disappear for the whole term and go on holiday to the alps and besides most postgrads live in private accommodation so there are no rules.

What kind of background does the no-PhD supervisor have? Has he got lots of industry experience or something? What makes him qualified to supervise someone?

hi, have you officially terminated your phd and student status?

Starting at Oxford

You should be given the chance of getting a college room. Consider yourself unlucky if you don't. As you are a newbie to Oxford, college accommodation is probably the cheapest and the best way to meet new people. Singles accommodation in Oxford is highly variable and generally costly.

It is the way forward really.

shocking post-doc salaries
J

My postdoc salary is £28.5k? The minimum on the university scale for postdocs is £27k. I wonder if it depends on what union your university belongs to? A lot of universities seem to have the same salary scales as us but others use a different scale where £25k is the basic rate.

How many publications did u have/ do you need?
J

I only got one related to my thesis but in my field that is typical. For one thing, it normally takes anywhere between 6-18 months for the paper to get reviewed and then another 3-6 months to do corrections so getting 3+ papers is highly unlikely.

Choose between the reputation of your supervisor OR university?

One thing to consider is the wealth of intellectual capital at Cambridge. As well as the LMB there are lots of research groups doing all sorts of very exciting things in Cambridge. Remember what you do for your PhD is not necessarily what you are going to be doing for life and you should consider how this other institute compares in terms of providing a broad education/experience.

American perceptions of a British education/PhD
J

I think British PhDs are generally looked upon favourably by US academics. The lack of UK academics from outside Oxbridge or London in the US purely stems from the fact that the US has such a wealth of research institutions as well as competition from other European countries as well as the increasing numbers of high quality PhDs coming out of Asian universities.

sick competition among PhD students

when i got my research fellowship the reaction of many phd students to me changed quite dramatically. they were quite clearly jealous and i felt excluded from stuff after that :(
