Quote From eska:

Hi Lara,
That's great that your examiners were so helpful  and that you are making swift progress, you'll be finished in no time now!

I haven't done any work. I did have a fantastic night on Saturday, truly brilliant and not too much of a hangover on Sunday. However the family nightmare/trauma returned and I've just been totally knocked out. Needless to say, I have been devastated.
So, that's my weekend giving myself plenty of TLC right now and hoping the students won't be able to tell from my bulging eyes that I've been crying for ever. Hopefully, this, together with the warning from Christmas future about our employment prospects hasn't totally deprerssed everyone this morning

Thank you Eska, so lovely of you to say, I REALLY appreciate your support. :-)

I'm so sorry to hear about your sister, what an incredible loss. No one has the right to tell you how you should be feeling, you cant control how you feel. I'm sorry you had such a tough time. It's good that you felt comfortable to write about it. I once read that psychologically writing out how you feel helps more than talking about it. Its the very act of writing that helps to organise thoughts in your head. Anytime you need an output just come on in here and share or feel free to pm me. You should definately take some time and do some TLC. It must be a very emotional and taxing time for you.
Glad you had a good time on saturday night.

My goals for today, is to FINISH all the errors. i have 4 errors remaining. and then going to reward myself and chill for the rest of the night and watch dvds.

chapter 1: 17 errors. number of errors fixed so far = 17/17 - >> 0 remaining. DONE! :-)
chapter 2: 9 errors: number of errors fixed = 9/9. DONE! :-)
chapter 3: 6 errors: DONE! :-)
chapter 4: 8 errors. number of errors fixed so far = 8/8 >> 0 remaining. DONE! :-)
chapter 5: 7 errors. number of errors fixed so far = 7/7 >> 0 remaining. DONE! :-)
chapter 6: 11 errors. number of errors fixed so far = 10/11 >> 0 remaining. DONE! :-)

chapter 7: 3 errors DONE! :-)

yipeee all the examiners errors fixed. and fixed a few that i found whilst reading my thesis during my viva revision, that my examiners hadnt seen :$ you know i have to say I am SOO impressed how meticulous my examiners were they must have read my thesis so carefully and i love how for most of the errors they suggested words and crossed out other words. i only had a couple of instances where it was just written "rewrite sentence" most of the errors they crossed out certain words and put in other words. i was truly blessed with amazing examiners :-) i cant thank them enough - will forever be grateful.

now i just have to add NEW references, and do final checks and bits and bobs. and then go over it again to make sure its looking perfect and convert them into PDF files etc. all of which i will do tommorow. onwards. clocking out now.

You can do it too!

Thanks Lara, congratulations to you too! I threw all my drafts and various papers out as soon as my viva was over! It's such a great feeling to get rid of it all! I am looking forward to seeing a hard-bound copy of my thesis, it's just too bad that I need 5 copies as it is going to cost a fortune! It may have to wait until next month!!

Also is there an unwritten rule that you have to pay for bound copies of your thesis for your supervisors? I feel cheeky asking but then they earn lots and have generous research accounts - anyone know??

:-x

aww thank you! :-)

thats a good question. my supervisor asked for a copy of my thesis. i promised him i would give him one. but later on , once i've submitted all my official copies. im not sure what the new rules are. i am going to have to ask my internal . some rules from QMUL tell me, that i only need to submit 1 hard bound copy. and 1 electronic. but i always thought, you had to have two, one for senate house and for the uni library.

i also want to do a copy for myself to have in the house.

how many supervisors are asking for a copy? luckily i only have to do 1 copy for my main supervisor.

You can do it too!
L

Congratulations!! thats super!!!! well done!!! (up) i too am just finishing up my corrections. and hope to get it done by end of next week.

i will be so happy when i hand in my hard bound thesis to senate house!! and i can start to recycle all those drafts and papers that i never need again !!! hehehehe

Quote From agniparbon:

I can't write even 15 minutes a day...what should I do? It seems I have forgotten everything I ever read on my topic. :-(

first take a deep breath. you havent forgotten its just gathering some dust in the back of your mind. Joan Bolkers talks about writers block and thinking block. she advices to do the following. try it and you will be pleasantly suprised.

set a timer for 10 minutes (yes i know the title says 15 minutes, but 10 minutes is what she states to start with). and either with a pen and paper, or on the computer, which ever you feel comfy with, start writing, freewriting, anything about your subject that comes to mind. and continue to write for 10 minutes, DO NOT STOP. even if you hate it, you have to do it, its only 10 minutes, and you can do it for 10 minutes.

write about anything that comes to your mind regarding your topic. if you're totally stuck, write about what you dont know, what you need to find out, what you are worried about your topic, how you feel about it, basically its freewriting.

give it a shot, and come back here and let us know how you got on! good luck(up)

great advice given already! so i will just add my 2 pennies worth. and i agree with the other posties. you're being way too hard on yourself! it is perfectly normal to have unproductive days and off days. you're not a robot. believe me, some days you will be zooming through things, other times you will barely do anything!

my advice, set yourself specific tasks to do. if you have a pile of papers to read through, make it into a "game" when i had stacks of papers to read this is what i did.

i got a pack of cards. and shuffled them.

hearts meant i had to do a particular exercise, like push ups or squats, whatever. like for example, if i drew 5 of hearts, i had to do 5 pushups. and then pull a new card

spades meant i could take a break according to the number on the card, for eg, if i drew a 8 of spades, i could take a 8minute break doing whatever i wanted

and so on.

and then diamond meant i had to skim read the paper in the card number allocated time! and clubs meant i had to make notes from a paper- or whatever you want.

the point is that sometimes things will get tiresome, so you have to make them fun. and sometimes when i drew a 5 of diamond and set my timer for 5 minutes to skim read a paper, i found myself trying to buy more time so i could finish reading the paper, just so i could tick it off my check list!!
and if i drew a "break" card, but didnt want to take a break, i would put them aside, and collect them, for a longer break hehe.

but everytime i played the cards game, i always ended up reading more, and taking less breaks, sometimes i would end up reading for 40 minutes (even if it was just one paper). sometimes fear and panic can cause procrastination, and i am the princess of procrastination! so sometimes if you just trick yourself, it helps!
but yah dont worry about it, and just focus on small goals and tasks, it will all come together in the end!

Thanks Eska!! so nice of you to say :) ..how are you getting on?

i heard back from my internal examiner yesterday, and i was so nervous opening the email. but to my upmost suprise he said the two new paragraphs were perfect and is hoping that i get the other minor amendments done within the next few days. i was floored! i guess spending a week on the paragraphs paid off hehe :-) so i'm a happy bunny.
now i gotta do the list of minor errors and redo all the toc etc.

my goals are - fix errors for chapters 1-7....

chapter 1: 17 errors. number of errors fixed so far = 17/17 - >> 0 remaining. DONE! :-)

chapter 2: 9 errors: number of errors fixed = 9/9. DONE! :-)

chapter 3: 6 errors: DONE! :-)

chapter 4: 8 errors. number of errors fixed so far = 8/8 >> 0 remaining. DONE! :-)

chapter 5: 7 errors. number of errors fixed so far = 2/7 >> 5 reamining.

Hi Lara, Good luck tonight! Must be frustrating to be doing this now, but we know you can do it.

Today I read for about 4 hours, then finished the first draft of my chapter outline, and I've decided to re-draft it tomorrow before moving on to the next one. So tomorrow morning I:

1. Re-draft the 2nd case study chapter outline.

Then celebrate my friend's daughter's first birthday.

thanks Eska!!!
:-)

well done on getting 4 hours of reading done and your 1st draft done! excellent! enjoy the birthday party!!

Hi Lara, I know its really selfish thing to say, but is nice to have you back if only for a short time while you do your corrections. You do start to miss people on the forum! I read your reply on your congrats thread that you will pop in and out of the forum even when you have completed your corrections. I think that's so thoughtful of you and I for one would be so happy to have your advise and tips and to know you will come back into the forum now and again if only to say hello and offer your support which is so appreciated. I haven't been on this thread for a while now got lots of admin type things to get down as soon as I am DONE with those! I will be back again to declare my goals, so mucchhhh to do its seems just too big right now! Good luck with your corrections Lara, am sure you will be done and get finished up soon, its just the last tiny hurdle or hoop you have to jump through.
