Any Conversation/Discourse Analysyts?
L

Hi,

I am looking for some references for features of talk - Has anybody come across a general book that introduces all of these? I have Hutchby & Wooffitt and Schriffin and various articles, but I'm hoping that there is a CA/DA 'bible' that details them in one go?? I've had a look but cannot find anything

Thank you!

How long do you work per day?
L

Hey,
I'm in my 3rd year (social psych.) and usually do 8.30 to 5, but then sometimes i do 8 to 6 then take time off for appts etc. On tuesdays my partner works late so I stay until 8.30 ish. It depends on my work flow, but try and keep to 'office hours' plus a bit more now I'm in my 3rd year! If I have a deadline to meet I'll also work at the weekends, but do try and avoid it as I want to maintain some kind of 'normal life'!!!
In my first year I did try and keep office hours, but was less strict about it so 9 to 4.30ish I guess. One of the big things I have learnt is to try not and compare yourself to peers to much - you will drive yourself mad!! As long as you are doing the work you need to and feel happy with it don't worry too much.

What am I doing?
L

Hi,

I'm working within a critical constructionist framework and this whole issue is one I have struggled with. It can get so confusing!! What methodology are you using? Sometimes the methodology can help when deciding your philosophical stance. I'm using a form of critcal discourse analysis so that automatically defined my stance. The constructionist issue doesn't mean though that you are constructing the meaning, but rather that reality is made up of various constructions - e.g. constructions shaped by history, gender, culture etc. I can't think of any 'simple' texts that would help, but Ken Gergen's work (esp. Social psychology as history. (1973) Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 26, 309-320.) helps define the constructionist stance. Hope that helps!

Hello
L

Hi,

The dept. is in the process of merging with another which means things are up in the air and everyone's still finding their feet so unfortunately i don't think it would be the right time to suggest anything. Also, with the merger (it's been very badly done!) i'm don't think there is anyone to suggest it to!! I'll have a word with my supervisor about it, but really don't think it'll come to anything.
We do have training workshops, but they are for the whole university and while i've made friends through them I have actually done all the courses now i'm in my 3rd year!!
I think it's just one of those things I am going to have to get used to unfortunately - at least it means I have no distractions from getting on with the very important job of writing up!!

Hello
L

Hi Joyce,
Thanks for the reply.
I'm normally not too bad at juggling, but have taken on an editing job which has turned out to be a nightmare so it is draining my time and my enthusiasm at the moment.  The deadline for the project is next week so things should get back on track after that. I hope to have a couple of analysis chapters knocked out by xmas so i think that will boost my confidence
Unfortunately there is no-one in my dept. who is working on anything even remotely similar - not even a methodology in common.  I have no comparison for lit. reviews or anything lilke that. My office is even in another building to the dept. so cannot even share office gossip or anything.  I can literally go days without seeing anyone. I do make an effort to meet people for lunch, but it's at times like this i just feel v. alone.
I guess its just one of those bad patches!
Fingers crossed this forum will help!

help! I feel isolated from my department...
L

Hi Eska,
I too feel separated from my dept. and I am in the office everyday!
My office is in a different building to the rest of the department and my research interests are different so there isn't much common ground
Just wanted to let you know you are not alone

Hello
L

Hi,

I'm new so thought I would introduce myself!

I'm Leanne and I'm in the 3rd year of my PhD in social psychology. I joined becuase I feel very isolated from the rest of the department and as friends have moved on with their work I'm feeling increasingly alone in my work. I'm really struggling at the moment to balance all the things I need to do - plus spend adequate time on my PhD. Any others finding this?

So thought I would sign up to chat to fellow PhDers! I couldn't work out from the posts if this site is mainly used by American or UK students?
