Chances of Acceptance after Institutional Action
M

Are you going to pay the fees yourself? If yes, they will most likely accept you.

I quit.
M

I am sorry you feel like this, but is there a way you can reconsider your decision? I would suggest you to withdraw from the course for 6 months or so, then reconsider and get back on board if you feel like it. Quitting a PhD is not a decision that should be taken in a matter of days. You really need to put some thought into it.

Native English proofreader needed for biochemistry papers

Not for me, but for my cousin who lives abroad. All academic papers (4-5 papers) are PhD level. Reasonable payment offered. Send me pm please.

Specialisation change from masters to PhD
M

I wouldn't be worried about this. They offered you the PhD thinking that you are capable of progressing. A PhD is tons of personal work, and it is research, which means that often one has to start from scratch. All you need to do is your own 'homework' and if you need extra help, ask around. There will be academics who are willing to support you and aswer your questions.

Proofreading !!
M

I would ask around in my department if I were you. They will be able to advise you for the right people to do this.

suggest me letter of motivation for Phd
M

Dear self

I promise you that when I submit this thesis, I will:

-go on holiday for three weeks without giving a damn about the department

-go to the gym and get THE BODY

-make sure I spend plenty of time with my other half

-buy a new gadget: the latest computer out there (and read anything but the thesis)

Fear of Public Speaking
M

You can take the course 'Talk the Talk' at Futurelearn. It has just started! Recommended. It will work miracles with your public speaking and it's free.

question about publications
M

I meant to say, there is not right or wrong. If you want to place your thesis as a publication before it is published, you can do so - just mention something like 'to be published as a book' next to it. It is normal in my field for VIP researchers to include unpublished PhD theses in the bibliography of their work, as long as this thesis is accessible online (even if it is still unpublished).

question about publications
M

On my academia profile I have:

-book
-published papers
-book reviews
-conference reports
-non-academic articles that I have given for the public (e.g. in magazines)
I have also placed the abstract of my PhD on my academia profile. There is nothing stopping you doing so (I asked my supervisor if it was a good idea and he approved).

bit of a rant...
M

Am I overthinking it?

You do, in my opinion. Well, as my husband frequently says: 'what's the worst that can happen?' Accept the whole thing as an adventure. Think back. You have experienced far more difficult situations that this, I am sure. Ok, it is the unknown that scares you, but accept it as a challenge.

Well, try to plan ahead if you can (call the university, if this is an option) but no matter what, don't be negative. Your negativeness makes you scared and probably puts you off. Try thinking of the glass as half full instead. Whatever happens, a job is a job - it will look great on your CV. Good things come to those who wait. If you have to climb a mountain, don’t expect to reach the top straight away.

Writer's block
M

When I was stuck, I used to open gmail, write my thoughts about my thesis on my email, and then email the text to myself. It worked miracles - and I had a copy of my work on my account! Someone I know used to write her thoughts about her thesis on a facebook note! lol

Starting a PhD - only if I get funding!
M

You could informally discuss the issue with the potential supervisors. I should think that if they are interested, then you increase your chances to get funding. You don't want to end up in a situation that you start a PhD when you cannot afford it.

question about publications
M

I only mention unpublished stuff that is sent to the editors and has received the green light to be published, in, lets say, the next academic issue of X. Stuff that simply sits on my computer... no.

Writer's block
M

My advise is very simple: instead of thinking 'I can't write this', sit down and write. Put your 'thoughts on paper' first and do the editing in the end. Also, don't use convoluted language. Use simple language instead.

The reports of my PhD thesis arrived 7 months late!
M

Can you talk to your advisor about this matter?
