Why would you want to feel guilty leaving your PhD, especially if you have horrible supervision?
M

Sometimes, it is a matter of perspective.
For example, a good person could be "someone who is always able to see goodness in others..."

What you see in others can be a reflection of yourself.
When you judge someone, you don't define them, you define yourself.

If you choose to work, you may also find horrible people around you.
It is your choice......

Quote From satchi:
hi everyone, thanks for posting!
universities' effort to reduce expenses by hiring new phd-ers does seem unlikely (to me, that is). For instance, how can they reduce expenses when the fees keep going up?

Let's assume your starting salary as a professor is £52,000 per year.
Five years later, your university may pay you about £70,000 per year because of your increase in publications etc... (just an example)

However, if they decide to terminate your contract and employ another new phd at £54,000,
the university may "reduce expenses" by £70,000 - £54,000 = £16,000.

Journey - Many countries are also planning to increase the number of PhDs. There is no guarantee that Lectureship is really a permanent job. Some universities are also unable to keep too many associate professors who have many publications. In other words, these universities may look for new PhD holders to reduce expenses...

In a report by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 317,000 waiters and waitresses in the US have at least a college degree; more than 8,000 have doctoral or professional degrees. In the UK, almost 80% of people achieving PhDs in science will eventually find careers outside science.

You don't need a PhD to publish.

Some high schools are affiliated to universities. The students have the opportunities to work with university professors on various projects, and publish papers in high impact journals.

Something is seriously wrong... Currently, there are over 101,000 Phd/postgraduate students in UK, for example.
But there may not be many job openings...... Government should interfere......?

Help me :' (

If the journal articles published are related to your proposal, then it should be safe.
Since some phd students don't even have any paper published at all.

Quote From journey:
So here is some positive news to add to this thread. This week i received a job offer for a permanent full-time lectureship and two invitations for interviews for two more lectureships! From countless lectureship rejections over a period of almost 2 years to an actual offer of employment and interview invitations in a single week is quite incomprehensible!

Thanks for the good news!
Perhaps you have exaggerated a bit... :)
Well, you have probably passed your viva recently. So it is not really two years after you've received your phd.

Corrections submitted... now a wait

Quote From Pineapple30:

My experience is probably a complete outlier, but I had to wait five months for my examiners to mark my major corrections/resubmitted PhD.

5 months to mark a thesis!? This should not be acceptable...

Minor revision sent back to reviewers

There is "no" common practice.
One journal's common practice is to let you go through three "revise and re-submit".

Secondary supervisor withdrawing from supervisory team
M

Actually, too many cooks spoil the broth.

For example, first supervisor prefers traditional approach, and second supervisor insists modern approach.
Assuming the final decision is to adopt modern approach, but the examiner may prefer traditional approach...

However, second supervisor could be useful as a proofreader at a later stage... :)

Sorry, I don't have any experience on working holiday.
My supervisor is equally disappointing.
This kind of supervisor should learn a lesson, one day.

Below is a website which could be useful...

To get "Working holiday visa" may help one to secure a job like teaching foreign language.
It is better than remain jobless while you are allowed to explore a country for a year.
Meanwhile, you may try to publish some papers such that your resume looks better.

Most importantly, it is easier to find a job when you are "already employed".

Has anyone done a video presentation for a conference?
M

Two years ago, i paid about US$1,000 for an air ticket to attend a conference initially.
Interestingly, the sale person later called me and asked if i have certain credit card...
Because i have this credit card, she later returned me US$500...

In other words, the price of air ticket could be reduced for various reasons.
Or just start a new thread to buy low-fare air ticket or how to waive conference fees... :-)

Has anyone done a video presentation for a conference?
M

A few more possible tips...
For air ticket, you may sign up for email alerts about low-fare deals.
The airfare fluctuates with time. You should find out the period when it is likely the lowest.

For cost of conference, it could be offset by cash award.
I've won an award during a conference... It was even more than the registration cost.
But i revised the paper many times. This could be a stressful method.
