You don't have to hate all other races to be a racist, it's enough to be prejudiced against one race or a few races.

You're not coming across very well here, Andrew. I would certainly not want to work with somebody who has your opinions or your approach. Your post to Fled listing facts about him/her that you have gleaned from posts on other threads was out of order and frankly a bit weird and stalkery. That sort of behaviour is not acceptable in academia or indeed on online forums.

Unemployed :(

I hardly think the choice is only between 'kicking people's buttocks' and '5 hours lecturing them'. Neither are exactly helpful.

KimWipes, was such an unsupportive, unpleasant post really necessary?

Well done, that's great news. :)

Done! It didn't take as long as 20 minutes, more like 10. Good luck with your research. :)

I have access to the journal but not this article or any of the other advance articles (not published yet in the journal, only available online). You might have to wait until it's published (properly) in the journal? Sorry. :(

PhD age limit?

But, to be honest - age discrimination doesn't end with phD programs. Looking at my life (female, probably 38 when finishing the phD with 1-2 kids) I am absolutly sure that a career in academia is nothing that I ever could achieve. I was well aware of that in the beginning and it won't change anything - but I am truly sad because I think I could bring a lot of life experience and fresh ideas to the table. But thats not what the universities are looking for..

Don't write off a career in academia just yet, Rina. I was 40 when I started my PhD (fully funded) and I never expected to actually go on to work in academia. I have now finished the PhD and am working at the same university and thoroughly enjoying it. It is possible but probably harder when you're older - which, as you say, is a shame because you've got so much life experience to offer at that age. A lot probably depends on the field you're working in. It doesn't seem that unusual in my field, most of the academics in my Department/Faculty seem to be middle-aged women!

need participants for my master dissertation survey
M

Hi, I've just completed the survey. This is such an important area of research, I hope you get plenty of responses! Considering the sensitive and potentially upsetting nature of the topic I was wondering if it would be an idea to say in this thread what the survey is about?
Good luck with the research!

PhD interview tomorrow!

Congratulations to both of you! :)

Oh the sexism....
M

It's utterly shocking! Very gratifying that it has been so widely ridiculed, e.g. on twitter. I'm sure these attitudes can still be found, but to actually be stupid enough to put them in writing...

Viva story

Congratulations, Dr Emaa! :)

Not accepted from more than 12 applications
M

What makes an application successful and how many people apply will vary widely between disciplines, universities and supervisors. I don't think there are any hard and fast rules! Contacting potential supervisors with ideas might work.

I applied (successfully) for a fully funded PhD project when I was 40, with a masters (and first degree) in a different discipline (completed 15 years previously). They seemed to think I had what they wanted - hasn't stopped me from suffering from impostor syndrome for the whole of my PhD!

Good luck, I hope you find something soon. :)

Your avatar looks so much like one of our old dogs! He was a staffie/lab cross, such a lovely dog, a real character (and producer of the smelliest farts ever).
