Definitely not. Although, I knew my external from prior events (very small field) and they can give indications as to things...
I would say that this is all a part of being a PhD student! Do t worry about it! I messed up a similar proposal where the head of dept was on the panel and as a result my supervisor got a lot of stick. So what did we do, worked on a proposal together the next time around as a learning experience and won the funding!
Amazing news Dr Faded! I just resubmitted today, so hoping I'll be in the same position in a couple of months!
That is truly awful! I've been keepingg an eye on your posts for a while now! My supervision team and I are also at the wits end with mine as whilst my internal has been helpful, they have kept moving the goalposts when we've tried to clarify things. Again, like you, I seem to be doing way more than the average PhD. I did have a small victory though... My external demanded another printed and bound copy, its neither the norm or expected here and on top of the 1600+ fee I've had to pay, I wasn't willing to fork out another 100+ for printing. Argued it out and the Grad school agreed I was correct :-) Same goes with handing back my old theses for comparison when they demanded everything re-written again. Minor victories eh ;-)
Keeping my fingers crossed for you!! Apologies for typos... quick break for me before I continue popping the submission together.
Mus xx
Have you had any news yet, faded? I'm handing in my resubmission at the end of the week. The thought of months of sleepless nights is killing me already!

My report for R and R was 5 pages in length- very detailed. Happy to send you it through.
Zutterfly-no explanation given. However, I think the embarrassment of being called out in the viva (examiners asked who had looked or even proof-read my thesis as it was shocking) has made him buck up his ideas.Well, that and my threat not to do corrections as I was so peeved off with him and the uni for, charging me a fortune for a rewrite. If you read my previous posts I've had a lot of problems over the past couple of years.
I had agreed a hand in date of 30 September for the rewrite, taken my entire annual leave around this and didn't hear from him for 10 weeks. Ended up being billed another £1600 (long story). So might hand in end of January. The External goes abroad for months before the end of my corrections period so under a bit of pressure if I ever want to graduate.
Keep your chin-up. Mine is a bad experience but I'm pretty sure you'll be fine!
4 months and he didn't actually read it (I found this out in my viva). In the rewrite he's taking about 2 months a chapter. But, this time I can see a difference.
No free printing and the sup won't even answer email, never mind give me a grant code. The uni printers/binders cost the same as if I was to print myself.
This is infuriating. On top of my £1600 fee I've now got to reprint and bind my thesis just because my external says so. It's going to cost me £100+ for two copies because he now requires diagrams that have to be in colour. So what exactly am I getting for fees?! Also. My external is overriding the uni maximum word count. You couldn't make it up.
Great value for money!! Anyone belong to a uni who does not permit extensions?
£500 is ALOT more reasonable than £1600. Thanks guys. It just supports my (not very complex) internet research which shows we are being treated unfairly.
Hello,
Colleague and I received R and R in past year. My colleague has now completed to satisfaction of examiners after paying a £1600 fee. He complained to the uni about this given they seem so much higher than a lot of places in the U.K. He received a response today which said the fees are fair because fees aren't charged for write up not minor corrections. Write up is six months. In fact, if you do not hand in during this time you are charged £133 per month and the same if you do not submit during minor correction period. Does anyone have any comparisons as to what particular institutions charge?
Many thanks,
Mus
Hi babygirl,
I'm having similar issues in my department and want to reiterate what others are saying. From my experience there is always more than one victim here. A colleague and my supervisor had a similar thing going on and it resulted in me quitting because of the bullying that resulted. Does your supervisor have any other students? Have they had the same issues?

I didn't hire a proof reader for the reason that my supervisor is the head of the grad school and has books etc published and has also edited and examined himself... so I presumed I could trust him. He is trying his best to keep me motivated now, but too little too late. Just get as much support as you can from the rest of the department! You will get through it though! I'm finding the rewrite a positive experience as a way as I'm treating it as an opportunity to get back into the field properly.
