Confidence?
P

Hi all,

Although so far I am really enjoying my PhD (9 months into it) and still motivated in the subject, I often feel lonely in my subject and sometimes feel like a bit of a loser. I didn't feel this way whilst I was working for a company, I think maybe because in industry you need to put up more of a front (show confidence), etc where in academia you are more free in that respect. Does anyone have similar feelings during there PhD?

Thanks in advanced

Advice on PhD Research with a company
P

Hello all,

I am looking to visit a company this week, and present to them about my research. I am in the first year of my engineering PhD and would like to make the most of my visit. Maybe even collaborate with the company for research. Does anyone have any advice/experiences working with industry on there research, both successful and not so successful (in terms of your PhD) with some thoughts of how you might do things differently knowing what you know now.

Thanks

Using Formulas and Diagrams from references
P

Hello all,

Just checking if I use a formula of diagram from a reference (not directly photocopied, but in my own writing/drawing) and reference this, is this still plagiarism?

Thanks

Write, Write, Write!
P

In terms of "write, write, write", as fellow PhD students have suggested. Along with other documents, I am keeping a "Research Report", i.e. anything I would like to write about I keep it in this, like a draft thesis building up I guess. Is this a good idea? Has this or anything else worked for others on this?
Thanks

Finish in 3 years?
P

I fully agree with you comments, I also have heard that you tip is the best one you can give for finishing a phd on time. Thanks

Finish in 3 years?
P

Hello all,

I feel that our university, keep drumming in the fact that we need to finish our PhD's in 3 years, however, there is this stigma associated with all phd's taking longer than this. I really feel there are conflicting interests to overcome? Any advice on making sure we finish in 3 years (would be good to get the feedback of others who have or expected to finish within 3 years.

Thanks

Too old to do a PhD?
P

Hi Jill, just to reassure you, there at the uni I am at there is no typical age for PhD reseachers, there are people of all ages from twenties to much higher than this. It's brill that people like you are willing to go back to apply what you have learnt in industry to research. My uni see's you situation as a postive, industrial/work experience is a good thing. In my case after completing my masters, I went into industry for 4 years and now back doing a phd, I must admit, you do forget a lot of things, so some times I feel I have to work a little extra to recap all the things I need to know (but you know how it is, its never enough we can always learn more).

I would say you have definetly stand a chance, and it also depends on the research project, it might require some good links/experience with industry, in that case you are suited!

I am also doing research in something I have not directly done before in academia or industry and it's nice to have a fresh challenege and learn new things.

I hope this helps, all praise is to our creator.

Take care

Using Pictures from the Internet

Your comments have really surprised me! I see professionals, academics, researcher's do this all time.. incredible!  Thank you all for your feedback.

The problems is that by everyone using pictures, graphs, etc from the net, everyone therefore seems to have really technical and advanced presentation material, but I guess others can see straight through this?

Using Pictures from the Internet

Hello all,

Quick question, can I use pictures from the Internet, without referencing where they come from, I see lots of lecturers and presenters do this all the time.

Thanks

spreadsheet/database help
P

I completely agree with Satchi, Spreadsheet is old news for what you are trying to achieve. Speak to you uni library. They should have full access to either End Notes, RefWorks (or similar) and most unis have training courses on how to use these too.

It will take a couple of days to get used to it, but will save you so much time in future

A potential second supervisor?
P

Brill advice, thank you so much.. and in response to keenbean, I have questioned my supervisor about his motive to have a second sup and its purely from a subject knowledge and data availability perspective.

Hi, I have never presented at a conference but have experience with general public speaking.

Just try to enjoy it, relax and you will do brill. Just think of how good you will feel after the conference! I am sure you have every right to be there and present. All the best and as you name suggests "keep_calm" :-)

What is a meta-synthesis?
P

My wife is trying to research the topic and there does not seem to much out there it. Is anyone involved with this? She is doing social work research.

Thanks

Having read your post, its seems like you have nothing to lose by applying, and you should at the same time explore other avenues at the same time and God willing the right thing will happen for you. All the best JimmyGee.
