Hi i am also preparing for my viva, would it be possible for you to pm the questions to me too please?

relationship breakdown. :-(

Thankyou. I didn't get dumped by text but got dumped over the phone. I could have dealt with it if it would have been this time next year. But, at the moment i'm trying to get things written up, do lab experiments and im spending most of the time in the toilets crying. Feel like an emotional wreck.

Hey all,

I've been on here for quite a while but, not posted anything up until now. Well, im in the final 10 month's of my PhD and things are getting quite hectic in the lab. I got dumped by my boyfriend of 14 month's yesterday and i just don't know what to do. Has anyone else broken up with a partner whilst doing their PhD and how did you deal with it? any advice to stop me from crying and help with concentrating would be greatly appreciated.

I came in this morning, hadloads of reading to do and what happens? everyone in the office decides to talk, play videos on youtube and the list goes on. ARRRGH. Did i get any reading done? NO.

Im so lost.

Hey Hamilton,

Aaaaaw that really sucks, i really feel for you because, im in the same predicament myself. Im in the lab everyday from 9:15 - 6:30 even 7:00 but, my supervisor thinks im just faffing around doing bugger all!
Have hope, maybe things might get better eh? maybe our supervisor's will get their act together. Its ok for them, they've been there done it its people like us who have to suffer the consequences.

Im so lost.

Hey guys,

This is the first time i am writing, i have been lingering on this site a while.
I am 6 monthes into my PhD, and to begin with my supervisor was really nice and had time for me, but these day's he is hardly ever here and spends his time elswhere. Which, i know is common for supervisors however, i need materials to be working with and he just doesnt care. I feel like, he's just not intere4sted in helping me out or caring about where my project is going because, he is too busy collaborating with other groups.
Today, was the biting point because, he is just so abrupt and has a way of trying to show me up in front of other people.
I really dont know what to do, as, there are day's when i am just so upset that i cannot concentrate on getting my work done.
Im sorry for writing all this, but it just seems like nobody understands where i am coming from.

Hi manada, Yes, im very excited too. I think at times i am abit too excited and hope i wont be dissapointed for whats in store for me!!!
I've heard some real horror stories on this forum about students and their supervisors and just hope it doesnt happen to me. But i do agree with you, it is the enthusiasm that keeps one from giving up when the "going gets tough".

Hey Manda, Yes i know, warwick has a brill reputation for biological science research and to be honest with you i really cant wait!
The research that you'll be doing sounds really interesting too, bet you cant wait hey.
Im looking at proteins that influence impairment of immunity in diabetic patients, so closely analysing complement proteins and determining how they cause the impaired immunity. I know i will have to do quite a bit of stats, and thats why i thought id post something on this forum so that i can get some advice from people. My supervisor is really nice too, he's very encouraging so that is an advantage.
Best wishes for ur project too.

Aaaaw thankyou for that manda! i really appreciate it.
I was actualy getting quite nervous because i know stats form a major part of the project but thankyou again. Where are you doing ur PhD? ill be doing mine at warwick.

Thankyou for the advice Manda. I believe i will be doing some cell culturing. Are there any good statistical analysis books that could possible reccomend? it's just that, when i walk into a bookshop the spectrum of books in that area is so large i really dont know what to go for.

Sorry, that comment was slightly incorrect. what i wanted to say was, im going on to do a PhD straight from completing my Bsc(HONS). I have quite abit of lab experience because, i've been working as a locum biomedical scientist for the past year, so that is an advantage.

Hiya again,

Thanks for all ur replies.
I will be looking at impairment of immunity in diabetes, but i am slightly unclear on methods i will use as my potential supervisor said he would fill me in on everything once i start!

Hi to all,

I have a general question for all those who are currently undertaking a PhD in biological sciences.
I will be commencing my PhD project next week, and i was wondering if anyone can reccomend any good books that i could possibly buy that would give me a rough indication as to what to expect when i start. Its just that i am going straight from Bsc to PhD nad feel abit lost because, i really dont know what to expect.

I would greatly appreciate any advice.
