PostGrad Forum Rules

PostGraduate Forum Rules

The Postgraduate Forum is here to help current, future and previous postgraduate students to exchange ideas, get advice and generally help each other out. Posts which:

  • contain personal insults
  • stereotype or offend groups on the basis of ethnic origin, age or sexual orientation
  • are purposelessly inflammatory
  • can be interpreted as advertising or spamming
  • are meaningless
  • contain bad language
  • are sexual in nature
  • discuss illegal activities
  • constitute a breach of UK libel, incitement or other laws
  • advertise postgraduate courses, PhD places, Postdoctoral or other academic positions
  • request scholarships, enrolment on postgraduate courses or employment of any kind
  • or are otherwise deemed inappropriate by the Postgraduate Forum

will be removed without prior notice being given. The Postgraduate Forum team will be the sole arbiter of what does and does not break these rules.

Each member is allowed one login account. Registering with multiple accounts is not allowed.

Private Messaging
Private Messaging must not be used for advertising, spamming or trolling. All post rules listed above also apply to Private Messages.

Moving Threads
If the Postgraduate Forum moderators believe a thread is in the wrong section of the site they will move it. In some circumstances a thread will be moved to the Removed Threads section.

Removed Threads
The removed threads section contains messages which Postgraduate Forum moderators think is unlikely to be answered or where the question is answered in other sections of the site. Where possible a reason will be given. If you wish to reply to a message in the removed threads section you are free to do so. Moderators will then consider placing that thread back in the main areas of the site.

What do the stars mean and how do I receive more?
The stars indicate how helpful users have been to other users. Some users post content that carries little value so this system gives users a way of spotting helpful users from high volume users. The vote button only appears on thread messages when the user logged in is also the user that started that thread. You can vote for as many people as you wish but you can only vote for the same user once.

One star is quite easy to achieve, two stars a little harder and so on.
The Postgraduate Forum Team reserves the right to alter these stars without prior notice.

How do I become a Moderator?
The Postgraduate Forum has a small number of Moderators, who for their own selfless reasons choose to take on responsibility to keep allotted sections of the forum within these guidelines and to answer queries when they can. Unless a moderator is listed as Post Grad Forum Team, then their contribution is purely voluntary. We deliberately limit the number of moderators to help keep the editorial policy of the Forum consistent. If you would like to be a moderator please get in touch.

How do I delete one of my posts?
To delete one of your posts you must be registered with PostgraduateForum.com. Send an email to containing the web link which shows your message. This request must come from the email address that you used when registering with PostgraduateForum.com
Although these rules cover most common situations, they cannot cover everything. We therefore reserve the right to take any action we think appropriate to prevent the disruption or abuse of Postgraduate Forum in any way.

We reserve the right to ban anyone who wilfully violates the forum rules.
