My literature review is 4K. I am forced to cut it short due to publication requirements.
About how to be critical.... that's always hard. I would suggest that you first write the last alinea of the introduction, saying something like: "In this review, we describe/discuss etc..."
Then you'll end up with 1 or 2 sentences and you restrict your literature research to the topics mentioned in those 2 sentences at first.

Only after reviewing/writing those articles, you start to look where things are missing to complete your review.

Good luck Hugh! For me, it sometimes helps to get myself in lockdown for the first 2 or 3 hours in the morning. As in: No permission to do anything else than writing.

After this bootcamp I go out for a walk and allow myself to buy something delicious to eat

I like that strategy, thanks for sharing :) I'm going to try it tomorrow morning!

It sounds like you are making wonderful progress, well done! Do you have a plan in place for this final year with deadlines?

I find deadlines motivating. As well as promising myself a treat :)

Yes, I want to have the 3rd manuscript submitted by the end of May. After submitting the 3rd I'll plan a strategy for the 4th. And yes, for me deadlines work as well ;-) otherwise nothing happens.

At this moment I am in that anxious author's mood (i.e. checking the status of my manuscript during the weekend, as if reviewers would return my manuscript on a Sunday afternoon)

PhD requirements in my country are 4 articles published in international journals (1 or 2 are allowed to be only submitted or in press). Each article will be one chapter in the thesis, so I haven't started writing, but those chapters will be finished once my articles are out.
