Working at home

Hi Emaa. I was in a similar position (although just too lazy to go in, plus I worked in a shared office, and it was easier to concentrate at home). However, being in made me feel more productive as I was "connected" to stuff going on. Can you go to a more local uni library? I often went to my other half's uni. You can get some sort of "library sharing" (SCONAL) card from your uni (all unis do it for PhD students), which allows you to go into others. It's important to be part of a community as doing a PhD is so lonely, and can become quite depressing if you let it! xxx

After a revise and resubmit, a minor corrections - which was really another revise and resubmit, but under a new supervisor - but no second viva, I became a "Dr" this month... I'd pretty much convinced myself it was all over, so the realisation is only just coming to the fore!

HELP ME PLEASE Supervisor a nightmare

All the important points about patents etc aside, if it is a clash of personalities, you need to consider what is best for you as an academic. You will be told that part of the process is managing your supervisor - and in some cases, if you have a supportive second supervisor and a Uni that will teach you what you need to know in terms of the fundamentals of research and writing (or if you already know) - then you'll probably be fine keeping your 1st at arms length and taking advice from your 2nd. However, if, like me, you need a bit more guidance, you need a supervisor who not only knows the area but can impart, or at least model the style/standard of research and writing you need to achieve Doctoral level.

Am I missing something?

Hi Kelly, This may not be in the right field, but Philip Riley in Monash University has written a lot on the student-staff relationship. His focus is mainly attachments - so it sounds like it will be directly "opposed" to your approach, which may make it worth a read xxx
