completely off topic - chilli con carne

Avatar for sneaks

i made a spagetti sauce last night - mince, carrot, onions, tomatoes, jar of dolmeo

I want it on baked potato tonight, but I want to make it into a chilli (without the gross bean things - ewww)

How is this done?? What spices do I add?

Or am I attempting the impossible?

S

Not to be overly mean, but using a jar of dolmeo is not really "making" spagetti sauce.

Basic recipe - http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/3228/chilli-con-carne

Are you sure you don't like Kidney beans? They're fairly amazing in chilli.

I would double the amount of cumin in this and add 1 tsp ground coriander. Also, if you have them, use chilli flakes (fry in oil and then add the oil and chilli flakes in) for the basic layer of heat in the chilli. And, of course, use salt and pepper to taste (which the recipe seems to omit.)

You could also add a bit of red wine.

yeah, I know the dolmeo is not too good, and not up to my usual standards. But in my defence, I'm writing a thesis :p

Thanks for the recipe - will have a go!

I'm tee total, so no wine about, maybe if I grate enough cheese over it afterwards it will be fine.

Yum, that sounds lovely - a nice looking recipe. I'm going to make bean and mushroom chilli later (beans are so cheap!!) so this has got me salivating. I tend to use fresh chillis though (they're dead cheap round my way), cooking them with the onion from the start - it never seems to work as well if the heat is added later, in my opinion. Though I'm sure yours will still taste great!

Sneaks, the quickest and simplest thing for you to do is buy a packet of chilli con carne mix! you add a bit of water... add to the pan, and bang.. your tomatoes are chillified!

S

chilli sauce mix would definately be the quickest and easiest, although the italian herbs in the dolmio mixed with the chilli stuff might be a bit odd ;-)

yeah, I was thinking that the basil etc might make it wierd - but maybe if I add enough chilli.....

Can't get a sauce mix as that would involve venturing out of the front door.

Will see what hubs actually wants for dinner - will probably be something else anyway :-(

SNeaks you have FIVE stars?!?!??! ooooooooooooooh.

and you ate carrots. maybe thats why .

to be fair, the carrots were grated in and softened until they were essentially carrot sauce.

Didn't attempt this last night - opted for prawns and spagetti instead.

Sure this is far too late for a response, but the only difference between my spag bol sauce and chilli is the addition of kidney beans, paprika, Cayenne papper and chilli flakes. Oh and I like to throw in sweetcorn too by my boyfriend thinks this is weird!
