To apply or not to that is the question

S

Just need some help with my PhD application.

I am a m.sc in biochemistry and have research experience in plant biochem/ chem. After 2 years break (i am teaching in an NGO) i decided to apply for Phd positions abroad in plant sciences. I came across a industrial doctorate that I would like to be a part of. However they wish for experience in a particular technique which I don't have a experience in! The technique in question is fairly recent and its not that commonly taught and I am sure not many people have experience in it! So I was just wondering its it worth apply or shall I keep searching for other opportunities!
If i do apply how expresses lack of experience in the said technique in Cover letter..

T

I think if people are asking for specific techniques, they really are looking for that technique.

I would keep looking if I were you.

R

I am a bit more on the pragmatic side. If it doesn't cost you a week to apply, I would take my chance and state that you are lacking the skills in said method but you are eager to learn and a quick study so you expect to be able to perform said experiments as quickly as possible.

In the end, it depends a lot if your "soon-to-be" boss is convinced of you and your abilities - or not. If you don't apply you will ask yourself "What if"..

Worst thing that can happen is that they send you a rejection..

T

This is true, but then you might end up in the 'I've applied for 50+ positions and can't a PhD/job' clique - some of reasons being that the job market is difficult, but other reasons are because a person can't possibly be suited to all these posts and the jobs are going to those that are.

D

Do they "wish" for that experience or require it? Either way, I tend to agree with ToL. There's such a tight job market, applying for posts where you don't fit the criteria is likely to dishearten you.

P

Yes it does come down to the word 'wish'. Is it essential or a desirable? If it's essential I probably wouldn't bother, if desirable I would. You'd need to show how you can get the required skills if they are desirable.
