1st year in lab: is this a natural phase?

I

Do you ever get the feeling that when you first enter into the lab, people will take you lightly, doubt your capabilities? For example, when you cant get a lab result at the bench and people straightaway question how exactly do you do it? Like it must be bad technique kind of thing

T

That's totally normal. If can't get a result with a technique it probably is something you're doing wrong to be honest, or at least it's something you're doing differently to other people who can get it to work. Even if it's not something you're doing wrong or differently, these things have to be eliminated first before you can find the root of the problem.

But this issue doesn't stop at bench work - it's the same in every new role. People don't know what you're capable of so ask basic questions that can seem patronising until you prove yourself to them and they realise you do know what you're doing.
