If I am not happy with the support from my current supervisor can I transfer to another institution, or is that not possible?

Under the terms of most studentships transferring institutions will not be possible, unless your supervisor moves with you, which kind of defeats the object.

Most universities provide students with an advisor who the student can talk to in confidence about just such a problem. Before you do this try talking to other students in your research group to see how they deal with your supervisor.
If you have not been allocated an advisor then speak to the postgraduate admissions tutor or head of postgraduate research in your department. If you feel doing this may result in discrimination or victimisation of some form then contact your Students Union first for advice.

It is possible to change supervisors within a School, Faculty or Department, but if your project requires specialist knowledge or equipment you may find your original supervisor hard to avoid. If possible you should try and resolve your differences. In cases like yours many students stay with their supervisor officially, but in reality rely on the guidance of another sympathetic academic or a senior post-doc. Having a poor supervisor is not an ideal situation, but you can work round it.
