PhD for people with lower class degrees

G

Hi, My name is Tania Katopodi, I am greek, and I have a BSc in Molecular Genetics (Sussex Univeristy), an MSc in Medical Genetics with Immunology (Brunel University), 23 months work experience as a research assistant & Quality Control scientist. I have tried for 10 months now to find a funded PhD but because of my 3rd class degree I can not. I feel that my MSc and my experience count more than my 3rd class degree but still I am disciminated on that basis. Can anyone suggest what I can do to find a funde PhD position?

G

I would just like to say that although my own situation is not quite like yours. I have great empathy with you and hope you can find a way.

G

with a 2:2 I have not found it easy. the funding is a problem I had several interviews and 2 offers Although both were for PHDs I would not have been committed to so I turned them down There is a possibility of a P/T PHD You could fund it yourself if you are working less expensive than F/T Today, there are so many 1st and 2:1s with MScs they simply reject anything below With a 3rd my opinion would be speak to someone with the possibility of repeating your final year to increase your grade

I am a student at the university of munich Germany and i am pursuing psychology of excellence MA: I have already gotten a first degree in sociology with psychology at the university of ghana ,legon and a postgraduate diploma in education at the university of cape coast ghana.I wish nto pursue a PhD in organisational psychology .What should i do?

G

I suggest you get some more work experience, I've got five years, a 3rd and an MSc. It also helps if you work somewhere with a good reputation in academia, where you can network!

In my earlies I had given more concentration on my family business and less concentration on study by which I got very poor mark through out my career and in my Post Graduate I got Third Class. Presently I am engaged in education business. If any body help me to guide how to get PhD it could be a great help.

It is possible that relatively you might have got 2.2.or 3rd class.
I know that some one got 2.2 has done well as a phd student, now he is a senior profesor and head of engineeringwhereas some one got 2.1 in the same batch still a senior lecturer. some faculty are envy of bright students and ruined some. At the end of the day you know your capabilities. one got 1st class in the second year and a pass degree.but he knows his capability and now got phd and a leading researcher.

Hiya! I'm actually looking to start a phd project I came up with three years ago. I initially got a 2.2 degree in design, and went on and got a 21. masters in multimedia afterwards. I've lectured in both for 2 years and have some industry experience as well. But in fairness, I have heard that the initial 2.2 will stand against me when it comes to securing funding.

But you have to keep trying, don't you?!

Best of luck anyways.

With a 3rd, i am afraid that you have no chance. Im being completely honest here. Its hard enough to get a good PhD even with a first and lots of good experience - there are a lot of very good students out there. The major research councils would not even consider you with a third and very rarely take anyone with less than a 2:1. My advice would be to do your final year again if you're really serious about doing a PhD.

hi katapodi
YOU CAN DO A PHD WITH A 3RD AT A VERY HIGH STANDARD UNIVERSITY INCLUDING FUNDING if you have worked for 5 years it will automatically up grade your degree class to a 2i and will also be eligible for a ESPRC grant, 6 years of work to be eligible for bbsrc funding, even better if you have a masters it will automatically upgrade your class degree to a 2i therefore eligible for funding from the bbsrc and ESPRC then it is up to the supervisors whether to take you on or not, i am in same position.
