stinking interview questions

G

Please give me any examples of interview questions you can think of!

Much appreciated, ta!

G

I was asked 'what do you expect to gain from your PhD and what are your future ambitions?'

G

The one I always had trouble with was 'Why do you want to do this PhD specifically?' This proved particularly difficult for an interview I had where they refused to give me any background information on it. However, I am now doing said PhD!

G

i was asked about my BSc and MSc projects. also about the research interviewer was doing, and my experience in the methods they used to date. MAKE SURE U KNOW UR CV!!

G

A question that popped up for me a couple of times was "What do you think is the most useful discovery in your field over the past 30 years?" Apart from that, the usual why you want to do a PhD and what makes you suited to it questions should be expected.

Some information on interviews can be found in our PhDs Explained section.

G

"How have you overcome difficulties in the past"

"Explain what you did for your masters"

Then I was asked if I knew that the pay wasn't going to be too great.

Read through their papers carefully, and, if possible make a comment on their work. Just show, that you've been intersted enough to see what they work on.
Ask them, how many PhD students they have had up to date. Request to speak to the other members of the lab, if possible without the supervisor.

If there is something in your cv which is not so great have a reason for this ready, and be honest. I took to long for my degree and told my suporvisor why it took longer.

I've got a PhD interview but it's on a topic I had to propose myself so what I would like to know is what they will ask about besides the proposal? I know they will ask about this in detail. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
