PhD duration

Hi, i'm about to start my PhD in October. Although you only get funding for 3 years, do most people take more than 3 years to finish their PhD? Or do most people finish within the 3 years?

Thanks!

Most people finish their research within three years, but take a little bit longer to finish their thesis. Many universities publish completion rates and times, it is a factor by which their level of future funding from the research councils is measured. If you are on a research council funded studentship you will have to finish within four years unless you have a valid excuse (usually health, rather than your research not working).

It depends on the number of courses you are supposed to take during the initial stages of your doctoral studies. There are number of other factors that determine the duration of Ph.D.The duration is between 3-4 years on the average scale.
