Btw, is anyone else getting increasingly ratty with relatives saying, 'we must arrange to do something/come and visit before Christmas' etc? I don't need the nearness of Christmas pointing out to me at this stage, thanks :p

DEFINITELY! I really don't want to know. Last years Christmas parties with friends/family were a bit stressful for me ("Are you STILL studying?" "Shouldn't you be finished by now?") and I vowed that by Christmas 2016 I would have submitted so I could tell everyone I was finished. It's been a helpful goal to keep me motivated for most of the year, but now it is just stressing me out given it is just around the corner...

I'm dreading this too. I accidentally told my dad I'll be submitting in Dec, and I didn't get a chance to explain to him that it's a very long procedure after it, so he's told everyone very proudly that my graduation will be in Dec 😳 (I just want to hide under a duvet)

Thank you Zutterfly and Chickpea. I really don't trust my supervisor anymore, so I'm going to have a go at structuring it like how you did Zutterfly, with reference to previous literature. If he doesn't like it, sod it!

I think another problem is that I think my overall discussion chapter can be combined with the conclusion chapter. As I have detailed discussions in each chapter too. But my supervisor wants a seperate chapter so I'll have to go along with that.

Zutterfly, I have also enjoyed it. But it's at times like this when I realise how toxic it really is; and it isn't worth the stress.

These 5 words describe me. I am at the end of my tether now. Just can't wait for it all to be over, though even I submitted today, it'd be months before I'd actually really be finished.

I remember having lots of emails ignored and then getting emails from them where they did not acknowledge my previous emails and instead asked favours etc. I was livid.

This is what makes me *really* angry too. They promise something, completely ignore it, and then pretend like the email wasn't even sent to them. I can't believe people can do that to one another. I just want to escape really quickly from academia. The environment I have been in is toxic, though I'm sure there are many that aren't.

I wanted to ask you Zutterfly, have you written up your conclusion chapter? I am struggling a bit with mine, in my 1st draft supervisor said that I shouldn't reference to previous literature. So I took it out and amended it. He had a look at it again and said it needs to signify why its different or unique to previous literature. A clear contradiction. Just a bit fed up with it all now :(

I don't know if this helps... I was having issues myself a few months a go. Supervisor related. (See previous threads by me this year). And now things are 100x better. There is hope!

May I ask how they got better? You can PM me if you prefer :)

teegs90, sorry to hear that! Its tough because we can't say anything. It just isn't feasible to say anything as I need them to a) submit and pass my thesis and b) to secure my next job.

What sparks this thread, Hugh?

I've been having problems, as I'm sure many do, and I don't want to loose faith in the system, hence my question. Its reassuring to hear there are good supervisors out there!

I'm really angry today with my supervisors. They promised feedback by a certain date, and I told them to let me know if they can't make that date, date has passed and I've heard nothing. Common decency would be that if you can't make the deadline then at least let the student know. I'm fed up.

I can't wait to submit and move on. My supervisor was trying to convince me to apply for a fellowship under him, but I literally need to run. Its a toxic environment and relationship. I don't understand why they are getting away with it (well I suppose because no one is speaking up, including ME). I've had promises made that were never kept too, and never an apology. I've had emails ignored for 2 months, and no apology or acknowledgement that they were sent. I just need to ignore the supervisor's behavior for a few months until I pass but I am utterly fed up.

So is anyone else feeling the same way?

You may get a response, it's the start of the academic year and so really busy. I never received a decision on one so I rightly assumed I was unsuccessful (for a lecturing position) but the professor got back to me after about 2 months. I discovered that I had got to the final few people when they were shortlisting which boosted my confidence so that was good.

You are doing well to be getting interviews Hugh :) I just applied to another teaching job and was mindful of feedback from previous posts I applied to. Hopefully we will find something soon!

Best of luck! I just received feedback for the interview I had this week. They were lovely and said I performed excellently at the interview, but there was someone who had direct experience of the job with stakeholders and therefore had more of an edge. I was just glad to hear something positive, and didn't feel sad about being rejected :)

Zutterfly, I got rejected after 2.5 weeks :( I've asked for feedback from the professor but I'm not expecting a response. I've had another interview since then too, I'm waiting to hear back, I would be very surprised if I was offered it though.

I'm also awaiting feedback on my first full draft and I'm kind of dreading it, especially because my second supervisor hasn't seen most of my writing before, and she is very strict. But I'm reassured that if it passes her high standards, then the viva will be much easier to pass.

My appendices are going to be quite hefty as well, although I am hoping that the whole thing will still be able to be bound in one book - must check the upper page limit for that. Are you both including things like sample transcripts? I was thinking of just putting in a page or two of a transcript with workings to show my analysis - one of my supervisors thought I'd be putting in all my interview transcripts, but I don't see the point in putting in all that raw data and besides, my thesis would then be ridiculously enormous!

I am not placing in any sample of transcripts. I haven't seen any thesis with transcripts.
