I feel like you are at a crossroad. What do you think would be helpful to you?

For example, to me, it would be helpful being able to make a schedule and stick to it. Organising my work and time is very difficult for me. So learning from other people's experience would be ideal. But also, like having a checking time with the group to make sure that things are moving along well.

So, you would be interested in pursuing research, writing papers, etc.? I am just trying to understand how we can set up our motivation and support group. My academic discipline is Film Studies.

Hi! I agree. Failed is the wrong word. It is probably due to the fact that I still cannot see that part of my experience in a constructive way. If I may ask, what are you academically pursuing?

Hello everyone.

I am a failed PhD student. Many years passed since my failure due to health problems. I am fine now and I want to apply again.

Is anyone willing to create with me a support and motivation group for failed PhD students who are not giving up?

I trust there are many out there like me who feel lost. Let's get back on track together! We can do it!

I look forward to hearing from you and supporting each other's work.

Hello everyone!

Do you think that faculty at different universities keep and update a blacklist for failed phd students in their field? I failed my phd and I tried to reapply, but unsuccessfully for too many times now.

Maybe I am just paranoid, but I was just wondering.

Thank you

Hello. I am currently an applicant for a PhD program in Audiovisual Studies in Italy. On Sept. 13th I have the admission oral exam. It is very difficult to keep me focused. I really want to succeed, but I need a peer to be understood and motivated in this challenging process. Is anyone willing to help me with this? I am not sure how, but we can discuss it. In exchange I can help with reading papers, dissertations, research, etc. Thank you for considering my request.

Unfortunately, I am not affiliated at a university right now. I am not sure how to contact people in my specific area of study. But I will try to follow your advice. Thank you so much.

Dear All,

I have a question for you. I am a former PhD student in Film Studies. I had to withdraw from my program because I fell ill. I am healthy now and I earned a BA in Psychology after leaving the US and coming back home (Italy). Now I want to re-apply for a doctoral program in Film Studies. But it feels almost impossible, given that I have been rejected three times since I recovered.

Therefore, my question is: is there a second chance in academia for students who failed once? How do scholars consider a student with a similar experience? Once a student's reputation is linked to failure, is there a way to break that link?

I really want to earn my PhD and I am not giving up, but I am also aging (I am 42) and I feel that I am running out of time. I believe many students are in my position and do not know what to do.

Thank you for any response.
