My sister is currently writing up her PhD thesis. I live in a different country, but have been going through her thesis and sending comments. So I am trying to offer her support, but I would like to ask whether you really appreciated any present/wished for any present I can send her at this time to 'cheer her up'. She is hoping to submit at the end of August but she has a week away at this time (brother's wedding). What did you really wish for when towards the end? I can see she is getting quite down sometimes (I commented on most of her conclusions, because she was way too negative, and put in them every possible problem in the conclusions and focused on all the negative aspects of her research), especially going through the corrections and would love to do something nice for her! Any suggestions?
Regarding the caveat, I always love this link

To the author's knowledge hehe
I had heard the same evening by email, which was great. Something I always do is ask at the interview (generally at the end when they ask...do you have any more questions and need to ask a question cos I feel stupid otherwise)...so what is the process from now on? When should I hear from you. Or something similar. Good luck for the position
Thank you. My supervisor submitted the paper so I do not have the passwords etc. But the supervisor told me she has not heard anything yet except an 'Acknowledgement of receipt of your submitted article' a month ago. Hoping I get comments and it is not rejected outright. Hopefully I hear in the next couple of months, with some comments :)
Hi. I just submitted my first paper to a journal a month ago. I have not heard from them. I guess this is normal. What I want to ask is whether this will mean that I will get comments from them at this stage, or whether they could just reject it outright. I know I have targeted a bit high, and it is likely that it is rejected, but I would really appreciate the comments.
Hi
Congrats on your new position. I took me around 3 weeks to get a bank account opening, but that is just because the people in the bank lost some papers. So it should not be too bad.
Regarding leaving a good job to start a PhD, I did it. I just went to tell my boss personally, and explained that I wanted to leave to get a more challenging position and wanted to do a PhD for myself. He understood, and though he told me he was disappointed he made my life much easier to leave the company (talking to HR, and allowing me to leave without paying any penalties for leaving my contract beforehand). I guess choose the person you want to tell who you think is the best (I did not go to my direct boss, but to his boss, cos I got on better with him and therefore he could smoothen out my departure).
Congrats on the PhD and good luck
Hello. Does anyone have access to this?

Just came across this...some of you might find it useful. I think it is quite good especially for people like me for whom English is not a first language :)...good luck
I would really appreciate your suggestions. I have supervisors in 2 Universities with expertise in 2 different areas I am combining for my PhD. Now one of the supervisors is leaving (to the other side of the world, he has no academic job yet - has recently had a baby and he is going back to his wife's home country). What tips do you have to dealing with this change successfully...what should I ask for at this time? I would really hope to still get access to the other Uni's (he is leaving from the institution I am not based in) instruments etc...as otherwise I would need to rethink my project. But do you have any other things I should look out for? Sorry for the mumbled up post, but I am quite confused at the moment. Would love to hear from your experiences. Thank you
Hello
I used LaTex for my MSc thesis, but have forgotten most of it. I used to use BibTex for referencing. I had to compile the references before compiling the document to change the output to show the actual reference (there was a BibTex compile button-This needs to be done a couple of times...not enough to click on the Bibtex compile once. I used to click around 3/4 times to make sure it has fully compiled). Once that is compiled you can then convert the document to the dvi or pdf viewer.
Check the Latex Wikibook, which I always found quite helpful.
Good luck
