Applying to 2 supervisors

G

This might seem like a stupid question, but is it frowned upon to apply to 2 people from the same dept? Ive already applied to 1 supervisor, but there is another one in the same dept that i would be interested in applying to? any advice??

G

Several academics are ego-maniacs. My Masters supervisor was really upset when I contacted another supervisor to discuss a possible PhD. My Masters supervisor told me to get out of his office.

There should be no problem applying to two supervisors in the same institution, as long as you are not sending out generic applications. Supervisors know that students apply for more than one position. If you are offered interviews they will probably be able to arrange them for the same day. If you encounter a supervisor who is offended by this, they may not be the best person to work for anyway.

Alternatively, you can send your research proposal to administrator and he/she may know which person you'd better to go to, or he/she may ask the two professors to negociate between themselves. Anyway, it will even strenthen your application, cz it seems your research fits into the department very well.

Raj you are unlucky. I got a lot of support from my master supervisor. While I have send my CV to two supervisors in same dept. They all replied me with a very positive manor. Should I tell them I applied both and when?

G

Raj, I think it's better to let them know that you've contacted both of them. Sooner or later they will know, and I think you need not to be ashamed, because your research area can involve everyone, and it is not private. Anyway, congratulations for geting the positive replies! Good luck then
