I am currently translating a few pages from a 1801 natural history text - there is a phrase I'm not quite sure I got right, partly because I don't know French that well, - any help?

" dirai-je, comme un sorte de plaisanterie" - "I ***, like a sort of joke"?! *dirai?!

My guess:
dirai-je= I would say
comme une sorte de plaisanterie = like some kind of a joke
