PhDs on Women's/Gender Studies

H

Hi all,
I would like to apply for a Phd in Women's/Gender Studies, in London but have no clue on how tos -funding included-, can anyone please help?

Also, is a BA enough for me to apply or do I need additional papers such as MA?

Any sort of advice would be much appreciated.

Contact the ESRC about funding opportunitites

You will probably need to get a Masters as well in this field - although it depends on what aspect you specialise in and some universities may not require it, but they won't be...well...the most prestigious institutions in their field shall we say...

H

What do you mean?

How does the application work? I thought I just had to write a very good presentation of what my reseach would be like and find a professor to support it...

O

Prestige is not everything, Mia...

H

In all honesty, at the moment I would just like how to do it and how to get funding. Prestige doesn't necessarily come from the university, can also be gained via what you do...

A

your first step should be contacting the university where you want to study and checking their requirements, they are teh only people who for sure can tell you if you need a masters or not. regarding funding, search through the forum, and apart from ESRC,look at what the university/department where you want to study has to offer.good luck!

S

btw, just so you don't get confused:

in some cases, women/gender studies PhDs, since gender studies are quite inter- or multi- or transdisciplinary, are not funded by the ESRC but rather by the AHRC (gender history projects, gender art, gender literature, gender cultural studies...). only if you look at gender from a social science perspective will it fall into the ESRC area.

S

LOL I didn't know you knew me as Mia - have you changed your username and I didn't realise you were the same person???

H

So what would you suggest me to do first, contact the Uni or the professor?
Is it true the professor might suggest me for a PhD or find fundings?

S

Contact the professor first to discuss your topic

H

How should I do that? I mean...should I say I need money to do my phd and explain the project I would like to work on or what?

Please help I am getting more and more confused!
(i've also gooled 'research proposal' and it seems way more complicated than I expected!)
