Post Grad Vibe!

G

Hi all!

I'm a PhD student at Sheffield Uni and I'm finding it difficult adjusting to the post grad life. The problem is that everyone is boring and dull!

Is every post grad scene dull and boring or have just entered the abyss? I know it's an academic environment but it takes the piss...will all the nerds and geeks at sheffield uni liven the f&^£ up and remove the thesis from their rectum! Yeah, you know who you are!

Are all uni's the same?

G

Unfortunatly...... seems like most places are like this. At least the last 2 labs I've been too!

Life's what you make it.

G

Not wanting to sound like a nerdy geek type but...life as a postgrad student is very different to undergrad life. You have to work a lot harder and hence, have less time for socialising. Also, a lot of postgrad students have not come straight from an undergrad degree (maybe worked or travelled first) and are perhaps older and have more responsibilities out of work. However, I'm sure you'll meet some like-minded party people and have fun, as the PhD team said, life's what you make it! :o)

G

Thanks for your replies.

I agree life is what you make of it. But I also think that people need a balance between work and play. I understand that most post grads are wiser (I dodge the use of older!), but it cant be healthy to be so uptight all the time. I guess I was just ranting because I was expecting the people around me to have some signs of a pulse!

Went to the post grad society other day and it was like the WI! Won't be goin again!

G

Make sure you enjoy yourself and party hard while you can, you'll find that as the PhD progresses and deadlines start to loom (for meeting abstracts, tranfer reports etc) the work time hugely outweighs the leisure time (sorry to be the bearer of bad news!) - don't even ask about writing up! Good luck!

G

It depends where you go, I did my Ph.D. in UCC in Cork, great crack altogether, lots of pints in the first couple of years and then down to serious business.

G

Hello! I go to Sheffield Uni, and I don't have many friends - perhaps we could go out and chat sometime!

G

Hi Sheffield Student, I'll be in Bar1 at 6pm today if you feel like meeting up for a drink!

How did it go? - how did you recognise each other? - Are you going to see each other again? Is this the first PhD forum wedding?

G

Hey! There's a fakehead, wannabe Toke Toke Pass!!! The thread posted on the 18th at 15:20 is a fake!! It's not from the original Toke Toke! is there finally a post Grad with humour?!! Shef student.. did you show up?? Be honest!! I won't tell any1!! Ha Ha!

G

Sorry, FindaPhD team not this time! Did you go out and get a new hat? Cilla stylee!

G

Sorry guys, it was me! I just couldn't resist...

G

I totally agree with Toke Toke Pass (like the name by the way). I think its important to party, always find my thinkings a lot more abstract after a weekend on the beer or whatever (ha ha). REMEMBER YOU DONT NEED WINGS TO FLY

G

I'm glad some1 agrees!

Wicked, are you actually a DJ or....?
